Computer Randomly Hangs

Post » Mon May 06, 2013 9:32 am

Now, I've just noticed an issue with my computer and it's starting to drive me crazy. What happens is I'll be using my computer for anything (watching videos (online/DVD/files on PC), gaming, browsing internet, etc) and then the mouse will freeze up for a second or two before moving off like nothing ever happened. Occasionaly my sound will cut out as well when this happens, sometimes coming back on it's own, other times requiring me to pause what I'm watching and then hit play again.

The most recent I remember it starting is maybe a week or so ago, but it could have been going on for longer and I just wrote it off as my PC doing something load intensive for a moment. The PC is essentially brand new as well, I built it at the end of March and I know it didn't have this issue for the first month. Everything in it is new parts except for 1 old 500GB hard drive that I store programs on.

I have done everything under the sun I can think of to try and resolve this issue.
  • Updated all drivers
  • Unhooked all hard drives except one with OS loaded
  • Swapped out to old GPU
  • Applied 2 hotfixes recommended in topics with the same/similar issues
  • Changed settings recommended in topics with the same/similar issues
  • Monitored CPU/GPU/HDD/head usage during problem
  • Unplugged all USB devices except for keyboard and mouse
  • Checked for viruses/malware/what have you
  • Made sure everything is connected tight and secure in PC
  • Swapped RAM slots as well as tried using each RAM chip seperately
  • Checked every hard drive for errors
  • Reinstalled Windows (still happened even with only Windows updates and drivers installed)
And after doing all that I don't know how to resolve the issue, let alone know what's causing it. Any and all help will be appreciated.

When this would happen to me, it has been a process that is having my RAM for dinner.

I'm not a tech for things like this, but steps I take to troubleshoot things like this is checking in the task monitor and looking at the processes or the resource monitor.

It maybe software you recently downloaded that you system doesn't agree with. I do all that before looking to the hardware.

Ah well the last thing your list killed my suggestion.

Open Device Manager and leave it visible, Notice if it refreshes when this happens.

Usually when this happens to me it means a hard drive is going to die or dying

Done, I'll see what happens the next time it occurs.

That was my assumption as well, but all disk checks have said my discs are healthy, and this started on one drive (SSD), so I cloned it to the drive my OS used to be on (250GB mechanical). So unless the stars aligned and both my drives felt the need to being dying within days of each other, this is something else.
