So, my favorite special effects artist just died recently and there seems to be no continuation for his exceptional work because of the cheap looking Hollywood CGI bull****.

What do you think of Ray's work?

How do you remember him?

What could be done with his stuff with todays tech as aid instead of replacement?

His work was before my time. BUT, as a child I loved watching movies with his monsters in them and even today if one of the movies with his monsters are on I won't change the channel. His is a lost art. He was a master at it and the film industry suffers as a result. I think movie makers should consider using stop motion again. It was actually more believable.

He'll be missed for sure.

Indeed. Believable is the exact right word; coupled with personal. For one example, the medusa scene (well... all of the scenes) in Clash of the Titans looked more intimidating and more entertaining than the newfound CGI cartoon ever could.

It's really the same thing with other, more close-up, effects too. John Carpenters The Thing was much more "real" than its prequel because of the conventional waxeffects... the list goes on: Jaws before CGI, etc. How good would some of the newer movies be without the burden of too evident all-digitality, with Rays techniques but just slightly enhanced to better fit the picture?

God I hate the film industry! :P

Good innings, but still a terrible shame. First Gerry Anderson, now Ray, seems it's a bad year for those who fuelled my childhood imagination. The 'rubber monster movies' had a charm to them you certainly don't get with animatronics, let alone CGI.

Sure, you could say it all looks a bit cheesy with modern eyes, but back then, and indeed now for those of us from what you might call a less cynical time, these creatures looked amazing. And it's quite possible the Hollywood blockbusters of today might be considered laughable unbelievable in a decade or so (the Enterprise from the original Star Trek titles has held up better then the one from the Next Generation if you ask me, as an example).

Not just the master of his art, but leaving a body of work in a style that will unfortunately never be repeated.

I was just thinking this the other day when I watched the Star Wars prequel right after finishing the original trilogy. So much digital CGI it was stupid.

Damn! That man is a legend.

I bought my brother several of his films on Blu Ray this past Christmas. We love to watch them. My brother's favorite is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIDJ-Y-_Dxs.

I never knew the man behind the magic but I used to love all those old monster/myth movies as a kid even though they were all before my time. Personally I think they should blend some of the old techniques in with the new as a purely CGI scene looks more fake then the old clay creatures.
