Would you support cosmetic only microtransactions?

Post » Fri May 10, 2013 2:05 am

I'm just wondering what the community thinks about microtransactions. As we see with SWTOR, it seems that 90% of the updates are to do with their microtransaction store, their main source of income, but everything there is cosmetic/convenience.

I would happily subscribe to this game knowing there is a cosmetic store which can be bought with special coins that you can purchase with real money or ones that you accumulate each month because youre a subscriber. And these items would also be sellable for in game coins on the market.

As long as the dev team focus more on the game rather than the cosmetic store, i'm all for it.

Huh? Half the TOR store is paying for the content with ridiculous prices.

I think TOR is just a free trial until they subscribe.

I completely agree with microtransactions as long as they're not the kind of microtransactions often found in "free" iPad games that pretty much enforce the purchasing of ingame coins in order to advance.

Yep, TOR is incredibly strict on its free to play option, it like forces you to subscribe..

I personally dislike the model, i believe that everything in a game should be available through progression and hard work.

Yes, unless it's a P2P game.

If it's a F2P game, then fine, add microtransactions, but a publisher should NEVER, EVER double dip their player base with subs and a cash shop. If I'm paying a monthly sub to play the game, then that sub should allow my access to EVERYTHING in the game based on my willingness to work/grind for it.

Even P2P games usually have a cash shop that sells mounts and non combat companions. I don't fully agree with it, but it doesn't interfere with the P2P qualtiy of the game, then whatever.

Cosmetic, mounts, possibly pets.. I would not mind as long as it fits into the whole game world…. I don't want shiny swim suits and maid costumes and happy peppy prancing pink ponies and pandas ….

How I feel about paying to use cosmetic items and all the jazz wholly depends on what else I'm also paying for. If I have to buy for the glitter and sparkles alongside a subscription then I will be up in arms about it.

If I'm paying for just the glitter and sparkles after purchasing the game then I'm alright with that.

If I'm just (as unlikely as it would be) for just the glitter and sparks then cool.

/Edit 300th comment, woo glitter and sparkles all round!

If it does not allow any advantages and allows only pure cosmetic stuff? Yeah. Why not. I don't see a problem here.

The problem, as I see it, is that if they charge a sub fee, then add a cash shop, then that sub fee is no longer granting you full access to the game everything in it. You'd have to pay the sub + extra on top of that sub to which is double dipping imo and should never be condoned by the player base. Even if it's just a cheesy tee-shirt for your toon to wear around town, it's still something that that's not included with the sub and is just wrong.
