Which monitor is the better choice?

Post » Fri May 10, 2013 5:19 pm

Alright, so I've been stuck with a discontinued ASUS 24 inch and an ooooold gaetway 20 inch for a few years now and I need a monitor upgrade.

Things I am looking for:

27 inch ATLEAST

IPS (preferably 120hz with a low response time)

Thin bezels

Pivotting stands (This isnt needed since I plan on eventually buying a triple eyefinity mount in the future)

I have a Radeon HD 7950, so running a single monitor wont be a problem.

So far I've looked at the new LG ultrawide 29 inch and the 27 inch BENQ monitor.

Does anyone have better suggestions? Would I be able to hook up three ultrawides in the future? (overkill I know)

or the old one, which is cheaper now:

Seriously, though, what are the model numbers of the ones you have in mind? Just the brand & size doesn't narrow it down to a single SKU.

Are you looking for 1080p or 1440p? I find 24'' the upper limit for 1080p - anything bigger and you really start to notice the pixels. And 1440p will be far more strenuous on your GPU (even a 7950, and running three monitors at that resolution will utterly destroy it).

Far as I know, there are no true 120hz IPS panels yet. Some cheaper brands claim it but what they apparently are doing is allowing you to overclock to 120...their "natural" state is still 60hz. LG made some I think, but primarily for 3D purposes (60+60=120) but maybe I misunderstood that bit...but I think I read they recently suspended their 120 production ... they may be more interested in OLED now.

Anyway .... high quality 30" IPS are expensive - $1200-$1600 US, for example - what's your price range?

But if you're at 27" to 30" you can just scoot the monitor farther back ... at a couple feet it looks fine really. Not as fine as it would be at 1440, but fine. And a couple feet doesn't = feeling like it's too far away. And if you're sitting on the bed at 5-6 feet away to watch a movie it still looks awesome at 1080.

But yeah, doesn't sound like the OP wants to go cheap on monitor setup, so I was guessing they want 1440 at that size.

BENQ: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824014344

LG: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824005396

Also, that Dell is on the top of my price range, and it would cost A LOT more to get into eyefinity in the future. I need something a little less spendy so im not throwing out 3k for a monitor setup.

Even a single monitor at 1440p? I will crossfire before I go into eyefinity

I wasn't quite looking for 30 inch yet. I wouldnt want to spend over 800. Safe to stay around 27 inch or the new ultrawides coming out

Well, true... but then you may as well just buy a 1080p TV. :P For a computer monitor, you're usually at a desk a couple of feet away, max.

At 30" 2 feet away would start to feel too in your face to me.
But yeah, I'm not trying to argue that 1080 at 27" is equal to 1440 or anything like that. Only that if budget is a concern for some reason, 1080 at that size isn't nearly as bad as is often the opinion, at least for IPS...don't know about 1080-27" TN, maybe those truly svck. I'm using a 27" IPS, and outside of the occasional low res photo on some website, it's perfectly acceptable, even text - just not top level pricey stellar.

@Daedra - Dell, HP for higher price ranges. Lower, the LG's have a decent rep these days. Don't know anyone who's used the BenQ's yet. Samsung used to be good but I've had friends commenting that their panels have tended to fail on them fairly rapidly lately. Whether that's bad luck or failing quality control I don't know.

Don't really have specific models to rec...that would mean I'd have had to try them personally and I haven't. I would, as always, recommend buying from a walk-in store and not mail order however. That way if it's not what you want it's easy to return/exchange. No matter the reviews, things like monitors can be a real personal preference issue and mail order isn't something I'd want to deal with.

Buying in store is a hard thing to do in the area I'm in. The only real tech store is a Best Buy 35 minutes away that I don't care to deal with and they usually don't have that much of a selection.

Does anyone know of that Ultrawide first hand? The games it does support make it look like it'd be a good alternative to Eyefinity.

Personally, I'd skip over those and go with a 16:10 monitor. The extra height really helps and adds a lot of space for information and helps when it comes to reading and typing, among other things.

I would too. Some people don't mind 16:9 monitors - even prefer them - but I can't stand them.

I'm a big fan of Samsung TVs, but I've always found their monitors to be a little flimsy in the build quality area. I'm a huge fan of Dell Ultrasharp monitors. I have two older 24" workhorses (2407wfp) and they still look as good or better than current-gen high end monitors.

$991 USD at Newegg.com right now with the promo code. Pretty good deal for that monitor.

Ugh...why does the new forum software insist on adding so much white space to posts?
