Day 4

The third day brought a sense of fervor and purpose to the group, spurred on perhaps by Sam’s retelling and the recent knowledge gleaned from it. They were determined to remain in the village and scour it for any relevant information. They were determined to remain open and uninhibited by barriers, despite the late suggestion by Viktor (Shifty). And, they were determined to send Persephone (Daggerfall) and George (dmel) to the gallows.

After Eunae (Webster) concocted a filling meal, and Aaron (hircine) finally got some coffee that he begrudgingly shared, they set off. The day’s search was businesslike, and focused in two main areas - the library, and the small row of businesses that lined the central east-west street of the town. The group searching the library spent a good portion of the day clearing rubble in the hopes of finding the entrance, and once they did, they found much of its contents to be smoldering or already incinerated from the bombing. That included the main sections of interest: Reference, Periodicals, and Special Interest - though the books on crochet and children’s literature were fully intact.

Still, they looked through those sections in search of something useful that wasn’t charred. Eventually, Kenna (Chef Kronus) pulled out what looked like a local map, and a watermark across it indicated it was printed by Mutata Inc.. The town’s name, apparently, was Waypoint. It was located just left of center on the map, and smaller than the other two main points of interest. To the west was New Alexandria, annotated with ‘Primary R&D’. To the east, annotated with ‘Mutata Headquarters’, was the town of Mutata, with an unannotated mark halfway between it and Waypoint. Running along the south edge of the map was an entire waterfront - south and just east was ‘Pump and Weather station’ and further east along the coastline the desert gave way to savannah, then to jungle topography. A small ways north and east of Mutata was a point labeled ‘Arrivals’. A line ran along the west, east, and north edges of the map... A fence, Morgan (Dovahkiin) surmised. They searched for a map of the surrounding region, but could not find it.

The team searching the business district had an easier time accessing buildings, but realized that there was a good reason they hadn’t found more substantial info... What hadn’t been demolished by bombs had been cleaned out. “Did the residents take these when they left?” asked Rufio (Cecil). “No,” said Jack (Nightingale). “It had to have been troops.”

Still, they kept a keen eye for anything that might remain. It was Marilyn (Xetirox) that spotted a loose floorboard in a second-story office. In it, there was a journal. Yamakazi (Morrowind) started reading:

“I’ve got to get out of here... What they’re doing, it’s inhumane! They don’t know the full effects of their test batches, but they insist on human trials, so they round up random strangers to take to New Alexandria to confine them. I’ve seen dogs, rats, rabbits, even (he gasps) hideous chimeras and people ripped apart by their mutations back in the earlier days of testing. Then they usually die - but never as their original human form. It’s horrible. I hear the security escort plans on walking off on the next batch of strangers midroute - at least their chances in the desert are better than in a cell. Well, unless they get caught in a Gentech raid...”

It ended there, as did the group’s hopes of finding more of use. They traipsed back to the town center to see Erika and George into the afterlife. “Sure you want to do this?” asked Sam. Silence, punctuated by a few unintelligible murmurs, was the reply. “Well, Rex... Can I borrow your pistol? Thank you. I’d ask you two for last words, but you said plenty already yesterday, so...”

BANG. BANG.

George and Erika slumped to the ground, their blood seeping into the sandy street and tinting it maroon. The group waited for an eventual transformation to occur, but none came. Apparently, these two were both innocents.

The group was devastated, and the very air seemed to sense their mood, as the wind kicked up. “Oh no,” announced Anazar (Erginho), “This looks like... yes... It’s a sandstorm!” At that instant, a thick hail of sand settled over the town, pelting all their faces.

“Take shelter,” said Sam... But before the group could find doors to escape the storm, others were taking advantage of the shroud of sand. A feline yowl rang out, and three figures darted among them, causing fright at every turn.

“Ah, something furry just rubbed up against my shoulder!” screamed Kenna.

“Get your arms out from around me, you hairy bastard!” exclaimed one of the men.

“Here, piggy piggy,” growled an inhumanly deep voice.

Doors started opening and slamming shut as individuals in the crowd found shelter. Sam ducked into a room and found himself alone. It was another hour before the storm had started to dissipate and he could venture outdoors again. Several others also came out at the same time. When they did, they saw the prone body of Johnny Knoxville, two steps away from an open doorframe, lying on his side with one hand near a dropped pig’s head and one hand near his neck... The front of which sported a straight gash an inch across and three inches deep, severing his carotid artery and cutting his windpipe. There were no other marks on him.

“Bloody hell” said Lawrence (Frank the Bunny). “This town’s sure not all we cracked it up to be.”

“Well then, I guess it's a good thing the map will help us choose a new destination. Until then, sweet dreams, and let's hope that your next target sprouts some fur...”

You guys need to drop the boxy lettering as evidence. Anyone wanting to keep their writing from being identified writes that way. Don't you guys ever watch tv?

Morgan

Well.... it looks like we were dead wrong. No pun intended *Morgan looks around awkwardly for a minute, after his unintentional cruel joke* I have no idea where to go from here. I guess I'll ask a few questions. Do we know who was standing next to Kenna before the sandstorm began? That would be a good place to start, since she screamed about something furry rubbing against here. And who was the guy who screamed? Do we know? Was it Johnny?

Well... [censored].

We've got nothing. What the hell is going on... I think maybe we'll find answers at Mutata. Names, descriptions, species... the things were chosen among us after all. If we're in this twisted game... let's see what we can find out about the players so to say. I'm done being a lab rat.

I can't help you (much) there... It was too sandy to see who was next to who - except I know George was next to Erika. As for the dude, it's not entirely clear - unlike our female situation, there's still so many men left, and sometimes it's hard distinguishing their voices when they're under duress. I do know it wasn't Johnny, since it came from the other side of the square from where his body was found.

Akira

I don't mean to sound suspicious, but let's consider the possibility that Kenna screamed to throw us all off. Just... yeah. Maybe not likely but we're running blind here.

Goddamnit, this [censored]'s too heavy, though, there's no way this is actually all happening... he runs his hand through his hair with a groan

Now I know my last call to kill someone ended... er... rather badly. So I won't be voting to execute again anytime soon. That being said... there are two individuals I'll be watching. Aime, linking back to the original notebook scandal from the first day... and Rufio. Because he may be the closest we have to the wolf in actual physical description. As it stands now though we have basically... nothing. As I said earlier. Christ...

Draws pistol, checks to make sure it's loaded, racks it, than holsters it
