Favourite Music Instrument to Listen To

Post » Sun May 26, 2013 7:27 am

I hope this works.

This is a poll on what you like to listen to. I was hoping to be original here, but this has probably been asked a few times already.

The reason for this is a school project (don't you love it when someone does this?), so I need as many people as possible to fill out the poll. If there's one there; I used an iPod.

So, tell me if I screwed up anything. I'd greatly appreciate your contribution. I need to have all answers in by Tuesday. Thank you.

Hey, would it make sense to cast in my own vote?

I don't think lumping such a broad thing as synthesizers together with specific acoustic instruments really works, since synthesizers collectively are capable of a broader range of timbres than all acoustic instruments combined. Best to just stick with some particular models.

Hell, it's just really hard to categorize these things in general. Strings can be anything from legato violins to plucked contra bass, and you might love one but despise the other.

Bass for me. As in bass guitar, electric bass or whatever; although it might be viewed as a case of "well you would say that" because I'm a bass player, I actually started playing because I was fascinated by the way it sounded: not just the way it was played but the various different tones, too (for the record, the boring old Fender P continues to produce my favourite tone... and after 25+ years of coveting them, I still don't own one!)

Mandolin and bagpipes. They are best when in punk rock together, but I like them separate, too. Bagpipes always have made me happy. I also love harmoicas, especially when they are used in metal. I have always wanted my own harmoinca, but my auditory processing disorder might mean I'll play the thing too loud. Last time I played a wind instrument, I hurt someone's ears due to being so loud without intending to be...

I hate the recorder because I gave someone ear pains without meaning to, and because I was utterly forced to learn the thing.

While I do love me some Flatfoot, I'm shocked this wasn't Seven Nations playing Patty Set

I have never heard of Seven Nations. Might check him or her or them out at some point.

Ozzy's really letting the side down by not joining in with the moustache competition. You can hear the lack of facial hair in his voice. The voice of guilt. Er, or something.

Oh a good bass-line that's for sure.

A couple of songs who's bass-lines I love:

Veronica Maggio - Vi Kommer Alltid Ha Paris (We'll always have Paris)

Kylie Minogue - Fragile

Blur - Beagle 2

Blur - Girls And Boys

Gorillaz - 68 State

Whale - I'll Do Ya

Steam Powered Giraffe - Ju Ju Magic (Official Live Version)

I think certain songs are backed up by the basslines, it's the pillar for the song to work.

Without it or with a lesser more generic bassline it'd not be as good a song.

That one is really quite catchy. And a lot of Lemmy's bass stuff was pretty cool back when he was in Hawkwind: I was never really a fan of his Rickenbacker's tone, but his playing really had a certain something. And pretty much anything Phil Spalding's done.

My favorite instruments are probably piano, guitar, and bass, but I have other ones as well:

- harpischord

- organ

- harp

- violin

- mizmar

- lute

- bagpipes

- some other woodwind instruments

- koto

Bah, I'll just go on and on, so I'll leave it at that... for now.

I'll be disappointed if any haven't been (mis)used by a punk band! The Stranglers had the occasional harpsichord vibe going on, and the electric violin certainly isn't unknown: I'm especially reminded of a screechy violin and guitar duet from early John Foxx era Ultravox ("we were always just a bunch of [censored] weirdos", as violinist Billy Currie observed.) Other than the organ (usually of the Hammond variety) I'm a bit vague about the rest, though.

Bah. Facial hair would've made him look much more evil. Or sillier. Either would do.

Golden Brown by the Stranglers is one of my favorite songs of all time. I just love the harpischord. Haven't been too exposed to the electric violin myself.

Emilie Autumn plays the electric violin pretty well. Love her stuff.

Golden Brown is awesome! Can't believe I disliked the follow-up Strange Little Girl in comparison.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=u5jaq1VSXJo#t=235s is the Ultravox song I mentioned; not sure if it's a true electric violin or just a regular one being played "enthusiastically", though (starts at about 3:55 if it doesn't do it itself).
