HDMI cables

Post » Sun May 26, 2013 4:14 pm

I've bought a number of them in the past year or so ranging from 10-20 bucks a piece. Soon I'm going to purchase a new Yamaha receiver that has HDMI connections and I need new cables. My question is, is there really a difference in quality between a 10 dollar cable and a 50 dollar cable? Some I have even seen higher cost but I don't get it. Anyone who can get technical on this would be a huge help. Thanks

when I used to study this stuff when I worked in electronics of walmart (i studied such things on my off time to assure that I had accurate info for customers) I couldnt find I real difference. the main differences were in X.X number. Like 1.3 vs 1.4 ( I believe 1.4 supports 3d and is backwards compatible so no worries there). There is no real difference beyond that. What your mainly paying for is length and brand name. Even gold tips dont make that much of a difference.

Yeah, besides the HDMI protocol number, there's not much difference. Just get the cheapest one supporting the version you need.

The one exception would maybe be if you have high-powered interference from passing over electrical wire. Otherwise the digital signal isn't going to degrade (and even in the case of electrical wire interference, you're better off finding a way to separate them anyway).

What they said.

Think of it like this: There are Alienware computers for 2500$ with 900$ worth of hardware, and there are Apple products for 1000$ that do exactly what the 150$ version does.

You're paying for the brand name, essentially. Some cords are longer, and obviously that'll notch up the price, but other than that, get the cheapest you can find. HDMI is HDMI unless you are getting EXTREMELY specific.
