Language barriers EU megaserver

Post » Tue Jun 11, 2013 6:04 am

A thought occurred to me today.

In most EU servers of mmo's germans, French and English speaking players could choose to play on German, French or English speaking servers.

Since this game will not be using small servers but in stead a megaserver my concern is that these players will all be clogged together and we will have three different languages in the same chat, which can be quite annoying considering most people speak only one or two of those languages.

So my question to you guys, do you think there will be different chat channels for these languages? and would you be annoyed that 1/3 of the chat is readable?

I would to be honest, i don't speak a word French or German...

It will definitely happen that people use non-English in general chat.

Let's hope we'll get custom chat channels for each language.
And of course, people usually pick guilds that speak their own language.

The question form you fill out will no doubt include your languages you are fluent in. You won't get players who can't speak English any more than getting non-RP players in an RP favoured environment.

yea, that would be a great option. I remember from Rift in Conquest how all servers were represented. was kinda hard to coordinate attacks with 3 languages. Option for language channels would be awesome.

aka English and Dutch. you make a valid point, but think about it, don't you think that being able to read half the chat is kinda annoying. Americans don't have this problem, since they speek "English"

i guess it will work roughly like that:

The Server will try to put people together based on Information like

  • Guild
  • Friendlist
  • language set or even location (IP)
  • grouped or last played with....
  • maybe some playstyle modifiers they let us choose like Roleplay, Solo/Group, etc..

At First the Megasever will Need to "learn" all the info besides Guild and Friendlist but after some playtime you will end up roughly with the same People you played and grouped with.

I am courious myself how that plays out but i guess you get what you choose. Live in Germany (IP) stay in a german guild and add only Germans to you friendlist and you will end up with only germans....... join a EU-Guild and add French,Italien,Greek-Players to your friendlist and you and up in a more international playfield.

I agree, eventhough i speak some other languages rather fluently...i would not care much to see the chat flooded with them or the rude remarks that will come shortly after! :glare:

You'd be surprised. We have a large Spanish speaking population that doesn't speak English and is currently not required to do so by law. In fact, for the general population, there is no "official" language. It's just that the majority of us do speak English so everyone expects everyone else to as well. Everything relating to the government is done in English. There have been attempts over the years to have English officially declared the official language of the United States by law, but it hasn't happened yet.

That's one reason I was surprised that ESO wasn't going to have the Spanish language version at launch.

I'm okay with that. I had a good few friends during my time playing WoW that were Dutch but they spoke English pretty much as well I can did. I don't get half as annoyed as some people get when it's just all foreign talk on the chat window though. Americans or the North American server as should it be properly called does have a language barrier there too, less so than Europe, no doubt but a good third (i think) speak Spanish as a first language and then to a lesser degree you have French Canadians too.

I can speak/read German, English, France and Spain also a little bit of Russian, so i cant care less about that aspect, but yeah it will be a problem atleast at the start of the game.
