Misconceptions about PC vs Consoles

Post » Tue Jun 11, 2013 11:34 pm

Not trying to start a flame war here, if what I'm doing is against the rules please lock the thread. This is a copy and paste of (some) of the parts of a thread just locked because I find these misconceptions are all over the internet. Feel free to add in your own misconceptions on both sides. As I haven't owned only a console since the N64, I might be wrong about some things! If possible, can this be constructive rather than 'PC IS BETTER' 'no CONSOLE IS BETTER'?

- PC will fail because there is no marketing for it

PC can have marketing clout if Microsoft bothered to market for it. Just saying that 'PC has no marketing clout' is lying, its just not used. Often games use PCs as one of their central marketing ploys (e.g. BF3 with it's stupid 'Designed for PC' when it was obviously designed for consoles)

- Way more people play Playstation or Xbox rather than PC

We have no idea what the user base of the PS4/XONE is (and you proceeded to attack people for presuming PS3=PS4, so don't even try going there) so this is just false. If we're talking about current user bases for the consoles, PCs are quite easily beating either the 360 or the ps3. I can go dig up the article if you want, it's outdated now (from 2010) but the trend towards PC has at LEAST stayed the same as consoles aged (probably increased), so that point is just a lie.

- Hackers and cheats are all over the PC and never on the consoles

With hackers and cheats, obviously you played on ps3 not 360. The ps3 invested very heavily in anti-cheat methods (probably contributing to it's $1000 price tag on launch... the PS4 is $400. Guess what level of anti-cheat it'll have?) and stopped them, but the 360 was rife with hackers and cheats after only a few months. Sure it's easy on the PC as well - for some games - but the game can easily stop that. Making alternate currencies, making the game rely more on dropped loot than bought loot (like pretty much every ES game) and a couple of other methods can be useful in stopping them. If its B2P (which it will be, its on the consoles) then banning their account sets them back $60 - that's a pretty serious amount to risk, as well as all your characters. A good anti-cheat can stop it. Combine this with the fact that you have the ps4 and x-one having VERY pc like architecture, I'm guessing it'll be MUCH, MUCH easier to hack on them than previous consoles - unless they've seriously upped their anti-hacking game. X-one looks better at this than ps4, as x-one is 'always online' which means it's hard to install hacks if it's monitoring you.

- Consoles are easier to use

Yes, it's easier to use a console at the moment. The steam-box could easily change that, and anyway - if you order a pc from somewhere like iBuyPower (it's more expensive than making it, but not bad) then it's insanely easy. Buy a $600 PC, put in game. Automatic settings (in-game or external tools) will let you run it easily. It's marginally more complex than a console, but nowhere near what it was.

- Consoles are very cheap.

Yeah, $399 is cheap because Microsoft and Sony undercut the consoles massively. But they make up for it in the games - the games are INSANELY expensive for a console. Just last week I bought Civilization 5 for $12.50, with all DLC and expansions. If that was on the consoles it'd be $40. Hell, Civ Rev is still $40 and that's really old. Even on release console games are more expensive to make up for the cheaper console. X-one doesn't even support second hand games anymore, so guess who'll pay more in the long run? You. My steam account has about ~$1000 worth of games on it (about 200, but some are games from the '80s) and I've paid MAYBE $300 for them. PC's are cheaper in the long run.

On to the blatant lies that is VERY common:

'If there is any weighing down its for the average PC owner who can't afford or simply won't upgrade their system every 6 months'

This is just a BLATANT LIE. It's not true in the SLIGHTEST. I have an old computer in the house I use for LAN parties that was bought 5 years ago (it was a $2000 Dell machine that was bought for my birthday, but in reality it was worth about $1000 if I built it myself. It's been running for 5 years, and plays games on medium settings at 1080p. If I set it down to 720p (e.g. ps3/360) I can play on high settings). That's 5 years old running better graphics than a console, and it wasn't even top end when it came out. Please try and convince me I need a new GPU/CPU every 6 months. A new gen of them only come out about once a year, so this statement is just bull.

Some common quotes seen around the internet:

'The next gen consoles are in the high spec range'

No. They are medium spec range for a modern gaming pc, and in a year they'll be nearly low end.

'The patch or update cycle was pretty quick on xbox live even with the hoops they have to jump through'

Again, no. It took upwards of 2 weeks to a month to publish a patch AND THEY had to pay. This discouraged game devs from fixing any bugs - what happens if you have a fatal flaw? At least 2 weeks of people leaving your game. It was not quick compared to the INSTANT and free publishing on PC.

'Infact much of the content was out on the 360 before the PC'

Again, lies. It was published simultaneously (to meet with the 360's time) or released at least 2 weeks earlier while the console patch was being certed.

'The UI of games is bad because of consoles? I say that Skyrim was more enjoyable on the 360 than it was on the PC for that 'exact' reason'

Exactly. Now it's coming to consoles it'll be designed for controllers and thus worse for the PC players. It would be a better UI for keyboard and mouse if it wasn't designed for the consoles.

Have I made presumptions about consoles that PC 'elitists' make? Please inform me :D

Since we don't allow threads about locked threads, this one is a no go.

http://www.gamesas.com/topic/724862-forum-rules-and-general-information/

And there are many threads in this section for discussing ESO on console already open. Please use one of them. This section is for discussing the game. One thread to discuss it coming to consoles should be enough for people to vent, express what they think of it and to debate that issue. Thanks for understanding.
