Charms Bar on Windows 8

Post » Wed Jun 12, 2013 3:03 pm

My step dad just got a new laptop with Windows 8 on it and he keeps calling me at my house for help. The problem is I have never used windows 8, and I never plan to. I have been looking up tutorials mostly since I can't actually be there to figure it out myself. He was playing a game and every time he would scroll to the edge the charms bar would pop out so I walked him through using regedit to disable it. The problem is the only way that we know how to get to wireless networks is through the settings thing in the charms bar. He uses his laptop while he is on the road in his semi so he will often stop at truck stops with free wifi. Is there a way to get to the wifi spot without the charms bar?

The charms bar isn't too bad, it only comes up when you hide your cursor in the corner of the screen.

Other than that do it the old way. Go to desktop mode and see the connection symbol in the bottom right corner, click that and it will open everything.

Is the Charms bar completely disabled or just the function of it popping up when the cursor is in the top left or right corner? If it's the latter, Winkey+C should bring it up immediately.

If not, the only thing I can think of is hitting just the Windows Key and typing in "Network," "Wi-Fi," "Internet," "Connections," etc. without clicking on anything and seeing if the Network and Sharing Center or something similar comes up. I'm bound to be working on a Windows 8 computer at work at some point today so I can have a bit more of a concrete answer once I have one and if the situation comes up.
