Change engine oil light

Post » Thu Jun 13, 2013 10:42 pm

So yesterday I noticed when I started my truck that the change engine oil light was on. The thing is I changed it only about 2000km ago so I don't think I should have to change it already. I'm not that savvy when it comes to vehicles so I'm not sure if I should actually change it soon or just reset it. It's a '99 Silverado 5.3L running Castrol full synthetic.

Should I get on that and play it safe or not worry about it?

I don't know anything about cars..but to me a change oil light probably shouldn't be ignored. An oil filter is pretty cheap

Don't change it, you'll be wasting your good oil. Pull the dipstick, check the oil level, make sure the oil isn't black, and keep on trucking. You should be able to run Castrol full synthetic for well over the recommended 3,000 mile change interval. Check online to see how to reset the oil light; probably something along the lines of turning the ignition to the on position (not starting the truck) and mashing the pedal three times really quick then shutting it off if I remember correctly.

At $9.00 a quart, you definitely don't want to be going through oil this fast.

I checked it and it was at a normal level, although I didn't check/notice if it was black so I'll do that in the morning I guess.

I'd say you could go 4-5,000 miles easy on synthetic oil, and probably even longer. Just make sure you don't buy a trash filter to go in it, like FRAM or (insert your parts store's house brand here) or something like that. I recommend WIX filters to everyone that walks in the door to buy oil where I work, and I use them in my vehicles, they are better quality and last longer.

It is a FRAM filter but in my defense it was cheaper than dirt at walmart so I couldn't resist. Does that change things a bit?

I'll see about WIX filters when I next change it I guess,

They aren't really built to last. They have basically the equivalent of cardboard inside them, where as other brands like WIX use a better filter paper inside them that doesn't break down. I can't remember the specifics as it's been awhile since I went to the oil filter training conference, but yeah...I just recommend WIX.
