The Elder Scrolls Online: 11 Things You Need to Know

Posted by BuckGB at 9:10 am on 06.20.2013 (1 day ago)

There's http://www.oxm.co.uk/56426/elder-scrolls-online-xbox-one-gameplay-details/ that seeks to tell us about the "eleven things we need to know" about ZeniMax and Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls Online, including why it plays more like a traditional RPG than an MMORPG, how it will allow us to switch between first- and third-person viewpoints, the guild-centric features that we're going to have access to, and more. An excerpt:

That article takes [censored] in such random and wrong directions its not even funny.

Well its a little funny, but not for any obvious reasons. Well, its obvious to me and probably a few others.

There ARE raids actually, they are just not calling them raids. They are called Adventure Zones, and you'll face waves of mobs and gimmicky mechanics as opposed to the single huge Boss mob.

Yeah pretty sure that article was wrong on that. Of course mobs will drop loot. Think the point was that so called End game loot simply won't be the best or only source of good gear.

This article is all sorts of wrong. There will be raids, but they are called Adventure Zones, but they are handled differently then your typical raid that you would find in a game like WoW. Also they are wrong in saying that there wouldn't be an Auction House in the game. There was an interview with Paul Sage by buffed right before E3 and he said that there is going to be an Auction House in the game, but it seems that it is going to be very localized compared to going to one Auction House and you see everything.

Edit: That guy needs to brush up on his researching skills, because that article is just full on misinformation.

It depends though on how loot is handled in ESO. If ESO is Free to Play, most likely there will also be locked loot boxes that you need to purchase keys in the in game store to be able to open them. This is how MOST F2P MMO's generate a steady revenue stream because there is nothing an MMO developer can sell that appeals to their customers more then keys to open the 20 to 100 to 500 loot boxes you have piling up in your bank....pretty soon you break down, get out your credit card and purchase some keys and developers know this and charge a premium price for these keys. Most F2P MMO's allow selling these keys in their Auction House, however unless you have a million + of the games currency to purchase one key you won't be buying them on the AH.

There doesnt need to be end game gear progression... It looks like they are following Darkage of Camelots realm rank progression system, Instead of gear you you basically buy stats, or passives or even abilities. So your still making your character better, the same way you would with better gear. But this system allows for crafters to still be needed for endgame as they make the best stuff. DAOCs system progression system be came much harder as you achieved ranks, so people actually kept building characters for years and years. This was way better than WOW's gear progression IMO

Firor or Sage have already said that crafters will be able to augment the best gear in the game but not really make it. Also 24-man raid-like-areas are already confirmed.

This article is wrong in so many ways.

With no facts to back it up, I believe the article is half right on loot.

Those familiar with DAoC, will also be familiar with templates... the best gear WAS crafted, with NO stats.... then another crafter put the stats into them, you custom tailored them. That way, the end game mobs (not really raids so much... as... adventure zones I'd call them) did drop some cool loot, but it was used to mix into a gear template that you used crafted custom pieces in.

I have a feeling Firor is going to recapture that... and I hope so. Stat caps please!

Best gear is craftable.

Large scale PvE is nothing like other MMOs and can't properly be called raids.

Thank goodness, on both accounts. The more this game is Elder Scrolls and the less it is WoW, the better it will be.

I actually like that more. I was a fan of UO's style where you could find some really good stuff in drops but you could also just hit up the local Brit player Blacksmith and get some quality armor that you could use at the highest levels and be fine.

What

Gear is going to be randomly generated like most ARPG's are. You kill a boss, or a mob, or whatever, an item drops and it has random stats. You get another item just like it, different stats. Again, same template item, randomzied stats. Crafters will be able to change/augment those in some meaningful way, thus optimizing the best items into even better stuff.
