Tell Us About Your Country!

Post » Fri Jun 28, 2013 7:15 pm

So I like hearing about other countries or areas in general and how day-to-day life is, because it's normally slightly different in the most unexpected of ways. I've come up with some questions that you can kinda use as a template to tell us about where you live--add and remove as desired; copy other peoples' templates, etc. If there are several people in your country, or if your country is very varied by region, you can also tell us about the general area where you live. You can be as general or specific as you feel comfortable (e.g., using Cityville, Regionland, Provinceton, or Countryandia).

NB: Please, of course, do not bring politics into it, as some of the questions may leave room for someone to mention politics, despite the questionnaire being inherently apolitical and non-religious for that matter.

Please do not imply your country or area is better than others or bring others down. This is just for information and discussion purposes. Don't feel deterred if someone else has done your area; there is still room for discussion and your own interpretation of your area.

Now for the important parts. For the purpose of the questionnaire, 'area' refers to a country, region, or city. You can also share the name of your area in your native language if you'd like--it may not even have an English counterpart depending on the area either way.

I tried to include as many as possible for everyone to sift through. Feel free to answer all or some. I'll put mine in spoiler tags to not make the length of the OP even longer.

Spoiler
Country/Region: Greater Atlanta area in the American South.

Climate/Biome: Humid, subtropical, yet we've got deciduous trees and Winters can get chilly and stay chilly from late October to early March. Summer is very warm and humid, but not as humid as a tropical area.

Favorite thing about your area: Proximity to a lot of areas that I only heard about growing up. Asheville, Memphis (kinda...), Helen (little hokey German town in the mountains with a river running through it), Savannah. Atlanta's airport can take you to many, many places (domestic and international) with no layovers.

Least favorite thing about your area: The humidity and emphasis on college sports since two major football (hand egg) colleges are based in the area, one of them being smack-dab in the middle of the town I live in; the fans can be rabid.

Main mode of transport in your area: Automobile.

Main mode of day-to-day necessity shopping (supermarkets, megastores [Walmart, Tesco], small shops, dairies/minimarts, online, etc.): Publix supermarkets and Walmart Supercenters. More people are getting into farmers markets and specialty organic stores, though.

Time of day that primary and secondary schools start and finish: I'm not sure about here since I moved as an advlt, but where I grew up in California, school was 7:13 AM to 1:50 PM in junior high and high school, and 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM for elementary school.

Months that school is in session: Early August to late May.

Language(s) spoken by most inhabitants: English, though a lot of Spanish-speakers and Koreans are moving in, so you see Hispanic and Korean parts of towns.

Popular vacation/getaway spot for inhabitants: Panama City Beach, Florida.

A popular saying in your area: "Y'all". "I might could [verb]". "I'm fixing to [verb]". Being from California, I don't use any of these, but "fixing to" is ingenious.

Most popular/discussed sport in your area: College football.

Most commonly seen item of clothing in your area: Black leggings tucked into brown boots.

Most popular car make and model (can also be scooters, bikes, and such): White, American-made pickup trucks.

Usual housing arrangement (students rooming together, cohabitating couples, families with [advlt] children, etc.): A mix between families, retirees, and students living together.

I alternated the bolding on the original questions to reduce eye strain.

Miami is also one of the most covertly racist places in America and is a good place for superficial drama.

I lived in MIami for four years during high school, after having moved from California (or *shudder* 'Cali' as my classmates at Ferguson called it...), so I can attest to this. However, a lot of Miami people have begun moving up to where I live. I lived in Kendall and Doral, so I guess the 'average house' was bright pink/orange with white shingles and frames around the windows; I always told my mom it looked like the houses had been sunburned while wearing their hurricane shutters. I also ran into a similar situation because my mom is Honduran but was stubborn to learn English before I was born, so we grew up speaking English at home. We were so heavily ridiculed for that in Miami. People in the store would hear her speaking to us in English (we can understand Spanish but have varying skill levels with speaking it that have improved with time) and go up to her and harangue her about having no pride in her language, etc.

Needless to say, I was almost literally friendless all four of my years there once people found out that I was from California but not stereotypically so. Good growing experience, though.

Also, Erginho's description of a house cracked me up.
