I have no words to describe how appalling this is. This kid has been in jail since March. Three months so far. Three months for a comment made on Facebook. And he may spend eight -years- for a single comment. This is, frankly, unacceptable. My faith in our justice system has been waning over the years, but if this kid is convicted, it'll hit zero.

There's a petition on Change.org demanding his release. I won't link it unless a moderator approves it, but I feel it's worth mentioning.

To me, this is a vast waste of resources, an absurd overreaction, and a tragedy for the kid and his family.

What's your opinion on this?

The kid will walk out with no charges, now that this is out in the media. Time will do its job.

As for the authorities responsible? They may or may not have more things to worry about then kids making sarcastic comments, considering it won't be long before a large majority of people are looking their way distastefully.

Overreaction indeed - look at where actual terrorists and mass murderers have brought us to - jump at every tiny little insignificant thing. What happened to "innocent until proven guilty"? Seems the opposite way around these days.

Besides, he is right: having an opinion on a video game doesn't make you "messed up in the head", and conducting a school shooting certainly does. All he is saying, from my point of view, is exactly that.

The only explanation I can come up with is that some twit over in the justice department decided that this would be a good springboard to further his career.

Of course that's the problem with our modern justice and political system.

It doesn't create people good at their jobs, it creates people good at winning elections and insane malarkey like this.

The person that thought this should waste the courts time should be indicted himself and removed from all future dealings in justice or public service.

Also, I think the Americas could benefit from a more English style of dealing with these kinds of thing.

They just shrug and get on with their lives. A day after the bus bombing a few years ago the buses were riding again. They pride themselves in not bowing to terrorism and that includes creating mass panic and insane restrictive laws.

Seems like the US legal system is going by a "fight fire with fire" mindset in their fight against terrorism.

Remember kids, instilling fear into people over their most minor actions is bad. Unless, you represent the law.

Stupidity is everywhere, but you'll just see more of it in certain specific forms in specific places.

I don't get the whole "You can't criticise if you can't do better" thing. Just because my country has stupidity doesn't mean I can't call out other countries on their stupidity, and I'm not going to bring up every flaw in Australia's policies when crticising foreign policies because it isn't relevant.

And why are you bothered by slandering comments from other Americans? If everyone didn't point out government mistakes because they didn't want to sander the country it would be a dictatorship.

Ah, c'mon. pal. This is the classical defense argument - a national closing of the ranks - of all those that have no other argument. But whenever one enters an international forum the first thing one has to realize is: hey, 'we' aren't that special anymore, at least not for those outside of the minor 'we'-group.
