Obscure Television

Post » Sat Jun 29, 2013 11:47 pm

Who here likes a television show that very few people have heard of/seen it? Do you ever find yourself referencing various lines and concepts that nobody understands, because they have not seen or heard of the show?

For me, I guess it'll have to be Quantum Leap. Awesome show, I like it, but nobody has ever heard of it where I live. Makes referencing Ziggy sound stupid. :P

I remember Quantum Leap. I didn't watch it much myself, but know various people who did; that's going back a few years, though. Which is probably my main source of "stuff nobody's ever heard of", on the basis that a lot of it just hasn't been back in vogue since then!

I can't think of anything too recent. But usually when I make references to an 'obscure' show that people don't understand, a couple years later it becomes really popular and everybody knows the references all of a sudden.

Like South Park, Family guy, The League, Breaking Bad. Those off the top of my head are shows that I watched when they first came out and made references to that nobody understood, but now years later, everybody and their dog watches those shows.

Hmm. I guess theres that somewhat new canadian cartoon on teletoon at night called Fugget About It. That's the most recent one that ive made a reference to and people I know didn't get it.

I know what you mean. Barely a year ago, nobody would understand a Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reference, but now it's everywhere.

The Tick. There's two shows, though. I like the cartoon version. It was more of a show advlts would find funny, but somehow was also kid friendly. I used to watch it all the time as a kid because it was on Jetix(when Toon Disney existed and was then being taken over by that programming block) and I loved it. Loved the humor, the absurdity of it, the characters, and just adored the show. I looked for a DVD of it and found out every DVD of it has VHS recording quality. I was sad to heard that.

Gargoyles isn't really obscure, but it is now. I watched that show like crazy as a kid. It was the show I would break bed time rules for, in fact. My mom tried claiming the show was for 16 year olds, but it didn't stop me. I loved the story and the characters. It also fed my love of monsters I had and still have. I was about 6 when I first watched the show. It's still a quality show, too. You can watch the entire show on Youtube if you want. Disney did release maybe two seasons on DVD. Pretty sure they only had half of the second season on DVD, though. There is a third season, but it was where the show began to almost become a parody of itself.

I wasn't big into live action TV as a kid and still am not, so I've never really watched many live action shows. I always have preferred cartoons and anime.

I used to love that show back in the day (never thought I'd live long enough to use that phrase). Nowadays, I can't even stand to watch it. Here's the funny thing, when I try to watch Enterprise now, every time I see Captain Archer, I see Dr. Sam Beckett.

I never had and still don't have satellite TV, so I never seen much of any cartoons when I was a kid. Now I'm trying to catch up. :P

I used to dislike live action movies/TV shows. Not too sure what eased me out of it, but I like them now. Though I still think cartoons are still awesome. :)

I'm trying to remember what stuff I watched as a kid. I can't remember.

Adam Adamant Lives! Excellent show, largely only known as it was later aped by Austin Powers and that band that named themselves after it.

A lot of TV from that era actually. I've only know a few other people who've heard of Quatermass, and Vometia is the only other person I know who watched Blake's Seven.

Too few people, in my experience, have seen The Prisoner.

I guess I'll be that weird guy who has seen Enterprise shortly before Quantum Leap. :P I still remember Scott Bakula better from Quantum Leap, anyway, though. :)

I remember trying to figure out what Quatermass was actually about. I think that was the usual reaction from anyone who watched it. And remember that the BBC props department couldn't afford an apostrophe for Blakes 7.

Thats the one about the British agent who tries to quit only to get abducted and wake up trapped in a bizzaro community on an island somewhere with no way out right?

I've seen about five or six episodes.
