Ways to get your laptop to run cooler.

Post » Tue Jul 02, 2013 11:43 pm

I've had my laptop for less that a year, and while it's not exactly the top of the top it does have some quality hardware in it. The problem is though that it's always run really hot and I'm not sure why. To make matters worse, I just updated my nVidia drivers and now my laptop runs even hotter. I've tried using dust off and having less programs start up when I turn on my computer but I can't think of anything else to do. I'm also thinking of getting a cooling pad regardless of how well I'm able to fix it.

Can anyone provide me with some tips/help to get my laptop to run much cooler? I'm just trying to finish The Witcher. :ermm:

I also have an nVidia Geforce GT 630M graphics card that never shows up in the DxDiag report for some reason.

Cooling pads are essential for laptops in my opinion.
They prolong the life, and keep your legs comfortable.

I have a cheap $20 pad and even it works quite well.

But do either of you use your laptop for gaming?

EDIT: That was a dumb question, and I'm not sure of it's significance in this thread.

Gaming laptops are always going to run hot, unless you strap icepacks to it or something. My general use laptop has twice reached the point where it overheats and shuts down running something as strenuous as youtube. I just unscrew its bottom plate and clean out the dust from around the fan and heatsink, but that's not something that will need doing for a few years into the laptop's life, and I only did it to save me having to buy a new one for another year.

Nope---I seldom use my Dad's Laptop I have a PC for all my 'puter needs, that and a Windows 8 phone :D. Still a good cooling pad should keep a gaming Laptop cool.

If you have a graphics device that doesn't show up on the dxdiag, it means that you don't have the correct drivers for it installed (or installed them incorrectly, or they were corrupted). If the card doesn't have the right drivers, it might not operate correctly, including proper fan control. This could be one thing causing your overheating issue.

I just installed the new drivers yesterday, and to play a game I pretty much have to manually set it to the that graphics card by right clicking on the desktop and opening the Nvidia control Panel.

So cooling pads significantly help?

Note, the bigger the fan or fans, the quieter they are. You don't want a loud one.

I have been using cooling pads since about 2009 or 2010. My first laptop got so hot, I was getting near burn marks from it. You can get the things for pretty low prices, so they aren't a very expensive investment. Even a cheap one from Sam's Club or where ever else you shop at works fine.

I also have fans on my computer when I can. I have been sick lately, so I can't have them in me or my computer due to it being in front of me. Used to use a desk fan to cool my old laptop down, but it hardly did the job. It probably spewed dust into the computer, too. Only use desk fans if you plan to clean them often. If a game makes your laptop run hot, play it when temperatures are lower. Don't play it in hot temperatures.

If you have a more dedicated video card in the laptop, you probably will have more heat coming out of it than you would on one that doesn't have that. Just a guess. Still, use a cooling pad. If you don't have enough USB ports, just get a USB hub. I was about to get one for a good price at a used computer stuff type of store.

Take the back off, blast all of the dust out of the fan with compressed air, and buy one of those USB powered raised pad things with fans on the bottom.
