Are all FPS games with ignorant adolescence boys?

Post » Sat Jul 20, 2013 2:35 am

I have a question. I don't bother with online multiplayer. When my son plays, I see there is a lot of adolescence boys. I am trying to get the PS3 online working and tried it out. So I went on CoD what ever it was called and tried to see if the multiplayer was working. Well it is, but I couldn't believe the first word out was what seemed like an ignorant adolescence boy.

First thing out of his mouth was "N" word. Like what? Then all these young kids spewing out of their mouths to trash talk. My god, is the internet true? I thought when people say they don't play online is because of these kids, and all I hear is this bad trash talking, N this and N that.

Now I see why my son plays with the volume on mute. He knows I don't approve this so he plays without listening to it.

So is all these, CoD, Halo, Battlefront, Killzone etc games like this all the time? Now I see why people don't play. Here I was just thinking about starting these FPS games and play online with others. I don't find this fun at all. So are most of these games like this? Just F this, N that, and everything else under the sun?

Yes. While there are some mature people around, they get drowned in the horrible sea of brats. I haven't played FPS multiplayers in a long time, but a good idea is to organize a little group of friends that you can chat and keep with, and just mute any annoying random players that you might stumble upon (and you will).

It's a shame that most of the people in FPS communites are so annoying, because I actually enjoy playing shooters with other people.

Don't you remember what it was like to be thirteen and talk on the school playground with your peers?

I do.

It's all true, it's all gross and repugnant if you're not a male in that agegroup and it is all perfectly normal.

Your son is a smart kid by the way. In his shoes at his age I would most likely get aggrevated and return in kind, all the while refusing to turn the sound off.

Well back in my day... LOL damn I feel old, we never used the N word like what was being spewed out. From what I see, alot of people have no respect for anyone anymore. I know when on the school playground we said alot of stuff, be we were at least respectful of people around us. I guess, being faceless on the internet we are bolder and do things we normally wouldn't do I guess.

I play Planetside 2 and barely ever have to deal with immature kids. most of the people playing Planetside 2 are pretty mature and seem to be willing to help most groups complete a strategy/objective.

Yeh you run in into because those games are targeted to the male audience ages 13-35. Of course the least mature part of that group is going to talk a lot. That's why I try to group up with friends or just a 18+ mature group online and meet up. Gunslingergaming has a nice casual group of guys going, hundreds of members. I friended a few of them and it's all good, plenty of people on there aren't the "casual" type either, like myself but really went there just to get the mature lot. It's why I also only join 18+ mature MMO guilds and communities like legend-gaming when they have a guild going for a game I play on PC.

More mature and strategic games typically appeal to those types of gamers. When a game is as simple as Call of Duty with their online multiplayer, that is where you get the simpletons.

I haven't came across any sort of children or immature activity while playing Halo. Hell, it's rare to see anyone actually using a mic. And when I put my mic on and try to find someone to talk to they're generally nicer folk. I've found more childish fools while playing on the PC than I have on console.

I don't remember dropping the N-word at all or F-bomb that much when I was a teenager. Guess it depends on the kid and his friends. Also on the decade - when I was a teenager the B-word was a pretty serious epithet. Now its almost a term of endearment. Guess we can thank the Rap/Hip Hop culture for desensitizing and mainstreaming a lot of crude language.

yeah, I guess thats true.. FPS's like CoD are very basic, and don't involve much strategy. pretty much point and shoot...

So yeah, I can see strategic combat like Planetside 2 turning off younger gamers.

CoD = Okay, shoot the person... yay we won! (very basic)

PS2 = we are never going to capture this tech Plant with our current forces since they have the ridge lined with Tanks... Charlie Squad, go to the nearest Skydock and bring in a few Mosquito's and Liberators, a well placed Strafing run should cause a distraction enough to send in our Light Infantry.. All Medics and Engineers on standby, this is gonna be a fun one... (Very In-depth and relying on strategy)

Halo has changed a lot since I last played it. Until MW2, it was absolutely the worst.

Then again, I don't plan on buying a 360 for a 3rd time so I'll take your word for it.

Actually CoD can have a lot of strategy in it. Problem is if you don't get a completely organized group, a chink in the armor and the run and gunners will run all over you because the games have been setup like that, and each release it gets worse. I remember when MW2 had the longer faster sprinter perks and the 1887 shotguns...my god, it was so incredible stupid and you could see where the game was going.

Though when you get on a completely organized team with defined roles, a fire squad plus 2 support on a team of 6...you'll destroy the unorganized folks. Unfortunately, 95% of the people that buy the game don't get it to do that and the devs know this so they make it easier and easier for that group, and harder and harder for the tactical guys. I used to try to play tactically, would get called out that I svck and I would reply if you knew how to play as a team you would win more...then showed that when a tactical guy goes for the run and gun stuff, they whoops ass. It gets very boring and at the same time very frustrating because there just aren't enough people for that.

That is why MAG was so much fun especially when you had a competent Commanding Officer, Platloon Leaders and Squad Leaders and a bunch of people who knew how to map out a battle that had 128 versus 128 people. Mics were a *NECESSACITY* to win consistently in that game.

Parents seem to use these games as a parenting tool, and they don't realize some children don't handle failure in a game too well. That along with conforming to how they see other people act in those type of games, and you get a 12 year old punk who thinks its fun to curse online constantly.

Parent: "Hmm.. I need a babysitter for a while, but I don't want to bother hiring one. Let me give my child this game they are not prepared for to shut them up for 4 hours."

That's the logic behind it. However I will agree not all kids are like this, and some children have no issue playing online games like that.

Anyway, CoD is kind of a bad example because its the mainstream military multiplayer FPS. I'd play counter strike, or even battlefield to get away from the horrid communities. There are always bad eggs, though.

It is a rather common occurrence whenever I decide to play an FPS online, but I'm usually lucky enough to find a lobby full of people without microphones, so I don't have to listen to their crap. I mostly just get dikes that turn on their mic just so they can play bad music through them, or people who don't realize there's something wrong with their microphone. But you can always mute them anyways, so it doesn't really matter. But yeah, the people you can meet on their are quite disgusting, although there are a few really nice people.

This is why it's almost priority one to play in a party so you don't have to listen to the annoying pvssyr of some immature kids, if you don't have a party then simply mute everyone that's what I do and all is right with the world :D.

I've been pressing the "mute all" button since '07.

But yeah, usually before I'm able to press it I hear some angry high-pitched screaming, but that also depends on the multiplayer game. In Warhawk and Last of Us, it's not as bad as in CoD.

Speaking of CoD, an 11 year old girl once told me very seriously that I shouldn't be playing nerd games like Skyrim, but real games like Call of Duty.

Yep. The technical term is apparently http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Online_disinhibition_effect, but it's more commonly known (via Penny Arcade) as GIFT..... the Greater Internet ******* Theory.

(And yeah - I don't recall acting anything like that on the playground when I was 13. But, then, I was a geeky introvert with just a couple friends. And it was also the early 80's.... excessive cursing was something you snuck pay cable to hear, not something yelled from every street corner.)

Because as we all know Call of Duty is for popular people and that's what makes you cool.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFMdwGPkazI&t=0m11s people these days, I swear.

I actually find Uncharted 2 and 3 was not horrible, I can count only a hand full of times where I had adolescents being immature. I got the occasional thing where someone might curse when they got killed like, "[censored](the f word)" or something like that but it is normally said in a calm tone not screaming.

I haven't tried the Last of Us online, but will be interested to see how it is.

The only MP'r game I play is TF2. Though the "N" word is dropped from time to time, the community (of long time members) I play with is pretty good at vote kicking the bigots. If an admin is on they get banned. (And there is usually one but not always.)

"F U" is widely accepted, but it's usually more in fun rather than anger.

The "B" word pops up from time to time too but again, it's accepted by most as lighthearted rather than serious.

I've never been offended by swearing, but derogatory racial insults are way beyond simple swearing. Unacceptable in this day and age!

I enjoy listening to kids scream and rage when they get killed. I just like to listen and laugh at their ignorance.
