Lefties and Gaming with PCs and Consoles

Post » Sun Jul 28, 2013 3:32 pm

Growing up I never really found myself being happy with PC gaming with a keyboard and mouse. It never felt like could really get a good feel for the controls whenever I played that way, and constantly found myself hitting buttons I didn't mean to hit. Whenever I watch Lets plays or other people playing on a PC, it amazes me to see the quick pinpoint accuracy they can get. I've never been able to do that on a PC. On consoles it seems much more comfortable for me and I can easily hold my own in games that require threading a needle at 20 paces.

Lately, I've wondered if my dissatisfaction with PC Gaming is that I'm at more of a disadvantage than others because I'm left handed? Left handed people learn to just kind of deal with living in the righty-dominant world, build relative ambidextrous skills, and don't really think twice about it.

For the lefties out there, do you find you perform better with your mouse in your left hand than with your right? Do you find you have to completely rebind your keys to improve your performance? Do you find yourself on more equal footing when playing on consoles than PCs? I'm interested in hearing people's opinions and insights on this.

I'm completely ambidextrous when it comes to using a mouse. I literally have zero preference and switch quite often. One nice thing about using your left hand with the mouse is that your setup can be more centered, as the key pad of the keyboard won't be on the same side as the mouse.

Ambidextrous here. I find myself with a strange combination of left-handed/right-handed configurations. My desktop tower sits to the left, my mouse is occupied by my right. I write with a right, I pull triggers with my left. I open doors with my right if they are turn knobs, I open doors with my left if they are push bars or handles. I use a fork and spoon with my left, then switch to my right If I need to cut steak with a knife (with the knife in my left hand). When I used to smoke I used my right hand to hold the cigarette with my left hand lighting it, then switched my cigarette to the left after being lit. I find myself typing more often on touch screens with my right hand than my left. On actual keyboards (when one hand typing) I use my left hand. I dribble the basketball with my right, and shoot and layup with my left.

I'm an odd one, I know.

Just so you know, the world wasn't designed with lefties in mind. It's a right handed world built and designed by them. We have to learn to adapt sometimes.

Mouse and keyboard as a leftie? Not gonna happen, I have adapted to doing certain things in life that doesn't come easily to us due to which hand is our dominant one.

With games in general and browsing, I'm generally perfectly fine using my right hand. When I was younger, I'd use the mouse in my left hand solely for The Sims and the arrow keys in my right hand.

I use my left hand for precision and detail, and my right for strength and broader movements (I tend to carry things and throw in my right hand, draw/eat/write with my left hand). It usually causes no issues, but multiple times a day, I'll accidentally close a tab, log myself out of the forums when trying to get to the URL bar, click on the wrong program at work, etc. For some reason, annoyances don't happen as often within games. Or I guess I don't notice as much since it's for pleasure than productivity.
