Optimising the Wii for HD televisions?

Post » Tue Jul 30, 2013 11:18 am

I recently fixed my Wii, which has previously been broken for the past two years. Say what you like about the console, there were a few exception titles on it, such as a few JRPG games, that I'd like to play. The problem is, it looks simply atrocious on my HD television. I already have a component running it at 480P resolution, but still some of the games are unplayable. Disaster: Day Of Crisis looks as pixelated as an old 16-bit game. Does anyone know of a fix?

Buy a Wii-U :P Sorry the Wii is limited on the graphics department. The Wii-U is backwards compatible with most Wii games (but not Gamecube discs/hardware).

True, but the Wii U doesn't upscale Wii games, or does it? If it does, I'm buying one, immediately.

Not really an option. I don't remember it looking this bad, even when I used to play it on a large 37" television a few years ago. I've got a 42" television now, but that shouldn't make such a massive difference. I guess playing on the Xbox 360, which whilst not the most powerful of machines is still HD, has spoiled me.

Just try to get used to it. Even PS1 games look fine to me on my HDTV, and that's a lower resolution than the Wii.

Component cables output a more clear image, but as a result they also make the jaggies more noticeable, so maybe it would look better with composite cables instead.

The WiiU is HD compatible. So the games graphics will look the same, but they will actually work properly on the TV.

Oh, of course. The games will run through a HDMI, so it fixes issues with HD televisions, right? Cool. I'll keep that in mind for later. But, as of now, spending £200 on a paperweight isn't of interest to me as of the moment. The Wii U simply has nothing going for it. The library is atrocious, it's overpriced, and Nintendo still haven't learned lessons from the Wii.

On my old television, the composite cable made the colours mess up. Blacks had hints of blue in them and stuff. I guess I'll just learn to live with it. It's not noticeable on most games, but some look even worse than the old PS1 games. Disaster: Day Of Crisis looks like a disaster, for example.

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't believe its actually upscale the games, but by using HDMI versus Component, it will look better on larger HDTVs. Get a second opinon before purchasing the Wii-U. Its more of a quality difference going from anolog to Digital versus actually upscaling.

The Blacks on HDMI will look more "black". Some of the aliasing will look more smooth.

I'm sure it will look better. It's like how GameCube games looked better on the Wii, because of them running through a component instead of a composite cable, or at least it looked better in my opinion. However, as of the moment, you'd have to be a serious gamer who enjoys purchasing all the consoles and has the cash to do so, a Nintendo fan-boy or simply parents buying for their kids with no real gaming knowledge. The catalogue at the moment is simply abysmal.

The Gamecube supported component. The major difference is going from 480i to 480p (on select games). The problem with Nintendo is the good games are usually all first party games (made by Nintendo*). I would recommend buying a XBOX one or PS4, rather then a Wii-U, at this point in time.

I will eventually buy a Wii-U for the first party titles, like Metroid, Zelda, Smash Bros, etc...

There are the Sonic games. Most of them in the past have been Nintendo exclusives and the next three are definitely so too.
