What did you think of the TESO Demo?

Hello,

Since the announcement thread is getting clogged up I thought I'd make a simple thread for people to share opinions, and give a visual feedback to ZOS in the form of a poll. Please feel free to post your criticisms, praises and opinions :).

I thought it was wonderful, but it was of course, never enough footage! The one thing that annoyed me the most wasn't actually anything in the game, it was the constant cut aways to Nicks and Paul. They're great looking guys, but I was more interested in the game! :)

I was also hoping maybe a little bit of information for the questions they everyone keeps asking such as what is the business model or when the next big step in the beta will be, but maybe, fingers cross, they'll have something to announce via the web this weekend.

There's no need for you to delete your thread. Leave it, let it get locked, revel in the kudos! :)

Anyway, my reaction

THE GOOD

. The first person perspective was extremely fluid, and for an MMO the graphics were absolutely stunning. I would say they outrank Skyrim's on all but the best systems.

- The UI was unobtrusive, and I really liked the skill menu - it does a good job of letting you see around you lest you be surprised

- The wayshrines seemed to be enshrined in the lore, the Tribunal temple would indeed have shrines to Veloth, and it is believable they would be used as places of healing

THE BAD

- They chose the wrong aspects to demo. Everyone knows that there will be dungeons in the game, and we've seen a good bit of the combat. These things are core to MMOs and go without saying. What I was really hoping they'd do was jump into a character from each alliance, and walk around each faction capital (I think that's Alinor, Windhelm and Daggerfall), showing off the NPC interaction and "living world" they talk about. They should then have finished off by picking up something within the Main Quest and played through tht for a bit. That would have been much more exciting. The audience didn't cheer through the game, bit nearly did when they showed a shot of a Tribunal Temple.

- The enemies were pretty generic. Seriously, mud crabs?

- The reactions of NPCs to your weapons strikes, and weapon animations in general, were pretty sub par. The sword and mace looked rater heavy, but the Dunmer spun them around like feathers, and when she made contact the enemies only gave a stock recoil animation. It didn't feel like she was wielding a clunky, heavy weapon. Not very gratifying.

With only 30 minutes to present their project I wasn't expecting them to release any new news about the game. But PAX Prime is coming up soon, and they are suppose to be there. So hopefully we can get more info from that.

But, who am I kidding, we know that won't happen. haha.

And we would have people complaining if all they did was just explore. People would say, "Where's the PVP! I want to see PvP!!!" Or people would complain because they didn't kill anything. And the reason the crowd was quiet is because it's QuakeCon, they don't care about exploration in that convention, all they care about is killing. Hell when they demo'd Skyrim there people didn't cheer till they killed something.

The showed Dreugh, Goblins, Guar, Netch, and Mud Crabs. It's not like they are going to just pull like 50 new creatures and just add them to Morrowind. Thy need to make sense to the area they were playing in, and they did. And what's wrong with Mud Crabs? They are in basically every game.

Yes, they could improve on the impacts more. They are much better than what they were before, but there was an article a few weeks back talking about how they are working on the combat to make it feel "heavier." So I expect to see it being constantly updated throughout the beta.

I didn't say all they should have done was explore, but dropping into the major cities would have given it more of an amaze factor. They would have then proceeded to show combat in the form of a MQ mission. It would have been much more gratifying for a first reveal. Bog-standard MMO dungeons isn't going to win anyone over, or even convey any information.

They had 30 minutes to show off their game. That isn't enough time to do anything.

But, just because you wanted to see them explore the world, doesn't mean everyone wanted that too. Hell I see tons of posts about people who wanted to see PvP over anything else. People have different opinions on what they should have shown. What you or I think they should have shown doesn't matter because it's different than the next guys.

I'm someone who enjoys going into dungeons and doing them all day. So to me, I enjoyed this gameplay demo, and seeing how dungeons are going to work and to check out the layouts. I watched this with my guild and we were all talking about it during the live gameplay and we all liked that they showed off playing a dungeon.

They had 30 minutes just to show us some gameplay. People have been begging for this for months now, and they finally do it and people are upset because they didn't show what they wanted.

FOV on First Person is too small, imo

Combat impact is non-existant

Game world and mob details are fricking gorgeous

UI elements are really ugly

I agree with this. It seemed like they were playing at like 50 degrees or something. I'm not much of a big FP fan, but I wonder if they will add a way for us to adjust it if we want too.

I do have pretty mixed feelings about this. The first-person perspective is nice, but when you're in a dungeon-type of situation, it seems difficult to know where everything is at and who's friend and who's foe (I think a mini-map might solve this though). I'll probably be sticking to third-person in ESO. The dungeon mechanics do look neat though.

One thing that caught my attention was you get experience just for exploration, which I thought was pretty unique.

However, what bothers me is everyone is expecting this game to look wonderful and shiny, everything working perfectly, etc. It's a damn beta. Things aren't going to be perfect. A beta means the game is still in testing, still in the works. What's shown here will (hopefully) not be representative of the game when it's released.

THe misconception im seeing amongst the WHOLE of the ESO community not just this forum : They are looking for a Multiplayer Skyrim.

I loved wha ti saw and if you were looking close alot of my questions were answered. Familiarity of it plus the simplicity with room to customize made me so happy. There is still Months to go and im glad they are taking so much time to get it right. this game will look so beautiful come open beta and will probably melt my brain with awesome on launch day. SO EXCITEDDDDD OMGZ

I loved it...even though I'm only about half way through.

From my understanding, anyone who doesn't appreciate how impressive that is for an MMO has never played an MMO before.

Has a recording of it been posted anywhere?

I googled for it and found an article about it which sent me to a twitch tv site which just shows the Quakecon Q twirling around and around and around and around and around.

Some would-be helpful twit in the chat room suggested that anyone who missed it should try google (hello, that's what brought me here) and twitch tv (erm, that's where we are...).

I was very happy and only had 2 minor criticisms:

1) Please let us keep our mounts out if we get off them. Hopefully he was just using the "put away" command in the demo rather than just dismounting and the horse vanishing.

2) Please make the conversations like Skyrim where I just walk up to the person and talk to them (granted instanced). Please don't make it a whole new, weird jarring scene with its own camera angle.

The only thing I didn't like was I wished they weren't showing to an FPS crowd and spent more time in 3rd person with melee combat.

I agree but that seems to be how they are marketing it. Paul Sage even said, "Thank you for coming out to see this next in the saga of Elder Scrolls and followup to Skyrim."

That seems dangerous in terms of setting up expectations.

I knew they would be in FPV the entire time. They are trying to pump all of the players up that wanted to see it.

I wished he would have switched between the two views more often, because I don't normally play FPV at all.

Watching the archer felt a little boring at times, but for a few understandable reasons:

1. The animations don't appear to be finished.

2. I have no control over the abilities being used, which makes it nearly the same as watching him simply shoot arrows.

I don't think I'll be an archer, but I was really looking forward to seeing some PvP. I knew that they were going to run a dungeon, but didn't know that was all it was going to be.

Ah well...I'm still very excited.

One thing I think people need to remember, is that even in closed beta, it's an MMO, which looks more like Elder Scrolls than I'd have thought possible until I saw it with my own eyes. I dislike how people compare it to non-MMO games, but I suppose it can't be helped since the graphics don't look like MMO graphics.

I no longer feel an incredible need to play the beta, because while I wanted to play (and yes, of course, test bugs; untie your panties), I mainly wanted to compare it to WoW in terms of MMO quality, and Morrowind/Oblivion/Skyrim in terms of Elder scrolls. I was not disappointed.

Again, I can't wait.

One more complaint to add to the pile:

I'M NOT PLAYING IT RIGHT NOW!!!

I think the game looked incredible considering its a closed beta.. Every new footage release we get seems to get better and better so I'm totally OK with what I've seen so far.

I would have liked to see chat windows and how they will be incorporated in the game as this a Elder Scrolls game and the interface is as clean as possible which make it feel like a ESO game...

Only one major complaint however... I'm not playing it right now.

To the dissatisfied fans, remember they cant please everyone,it's just impossible to keep everyone happy; but as long as they get more satisfied than dissatisfied fans it's OK, it means they doing the right thing.

They released new information... gave you a good look into PvE, and most importantly for me, showed me how the aiming mechanics would work. While i wont rule out an Aimbot entirely, i can see it is almost near pointless with the softlock system ( Unless you are extremely terrible... or lazy ).
