Bubba Ho-Tep and other obscure movies

Post » Wed Aug 07, 2013 12:29 pm

I just watched an interesting movie called Bubba Ho-Tep with Bruce Campbell and you'd think it would be a bad film but it turns out that it really wasn't bad at all. Basically Bruce Campbell plays an Elvis Impersonator who believes he's really "The King", Breaks his hip while on stage at a performance and ends up in a coma and ends up in a Nursing Home, which is being attacked by a dead Egyptian Mummy in a cowboy gear who svcks souls out peoples rear end. The only other person to help "The King" fight this menace is an elderly African American man in a wheel chair who thinks he's JFK.

This movie like I said isn't a really bad film and should be looked up.

So anyone else have any obscure movies they like.

"The Call of Cthulhu". The 2005 Black and white version with no sound was a masterful film that I don't believe many know about. If you have read any of H. P. Lovecrafts works, you will find that the movie almost mirrors his stories perfectly. It's a shame that it didn't get more attention that it did, but I guess the artistic choices didn't help attract a larger audience (they mimicked the film style from the 1920's, what with the B/W camera and having to read the on-screen dialog cards.)

First let me say that, Yes, it is an awesome movie!

But I would not consider "Bubba Ho-Tep" to be anywhere near obscure.
It has a very well known actor as the star, and the movie is very popular among all of his fans. The movie also had a huge amount of press behind it when it was released.
And it can be found at any store that sells DVDs.

Just because a film is not mainstream doesn't make it obscure. And just because a film is "good but bad" doesn't make it unknown.
hardcoe fans of "bad" movies already know where the real obscure treasure is... and it's not at your local Best Buy, and will never be seen on TV :D
Also, not all obscure movies are in the category of "fun bad".... But that's often the case.

As a hardcoe collector of "bad" movies, here's some truly obscure films I recommend...
Xtor
Hard Ticket to Hawaii
Gymtaka
Russian Terminator
C.H.U.D.
Deadly Prey
Miami Connection
Lassie: The Painted Hills
R.O.T.O.R.
The Dungeon Master
Troll 2 (obvious, but I gotta mention it)

.... I could go on for days

I caught Bubba Ho-Tep at a film festival where I live in 2003. It's a pretty creative film. I think I could probably make a list of obscure films a mile long after all the film festivals I've been to and visits to artsy video stores (also Netflix streaming every now and then). Recently I really enjoyed Troll Hunter and Upstream Color. Actually, the guy that made Upstream Color made a pretty awesome sci-fi film called Primer as well.

Primer is great. I'll have to check his newer work too.

Very similar film-making style, but very different film. It took me a while to piece together what was going on.
