So I'm Going to College.

Post » Thu Aug 15, 2013 7:34 pm

So I'm finally signed up for college and I am thinking about http://catalog.fscj.edu/preview_program.php?catoid=31&poid=5015&returnto=4127. My understanding is that a great deal of it deals with programming and I was wondering if any of you guys could give me some insight into that? I can choose languages like C++ and Java and I was wondering how hard are they to grasp?

The only bit of "programming" I have done was some web design with HTML back in high school and I think I had a pretty good grasp of it, though I know that HTML is child's play compared to some of the more modern languages out there.

Also how is the job market (USA) with such a degree?

Congrats!
I don't know much about programming, but apparently it's very logical.. So if you're good at logic puzzles then you're probably on the right track (I've been recommended it a lot cause of this).

Sorry I'm not much help but I thought this might give you an idea I guess... But again, congratulations :)

I took some Java some time ago, and seen C++

The hard part really is just memorizing the variables and how things must be ordered. If you're good with anolytic logic then it shouldn't be too hard to get started.

For example, before I took the class I knew GML (Game Make Language, lol) code, and it's just logic in any language, the Java wasn't hard to grasp.

Edit: Oh, and math. For advanced things, you'll need for logic skills AND math skills :P

I'm pretty sure my Uncle did that in university, he ended up working on some Transformers game, but can't find any work now in the Australian job market, not sure about the US.

Congrats. I don't know anything about IT but spend the time in college to actually get an education. Don't squander your parents' money on hokers and raves.

Programming languages are very different from HTML. HTML is a markup language. Very basically, its purpose is to tell certain things to display in certain places. Programming languages tell things what to do.

This is an oversimplified anology and probably doesn't give justice to HTML, but: Java/C++ is the movie director, and HTML is the X of tape on the floor where the actor stands.

That said, you should definitely give it a go if you're interested. While their functions are different, they share enough similarities in thought processes that if you grasp one you'll have an easier time with the other. Just expect a different, and perhaps very exciting, world. Plus, programming has its basis in logic, experimentation, and trial & error, and that can be handy in all sorts of situations. I'm finding my few courses in Java all sorts of useful in my current job, and the closest I get to programming is Excel formulas.

Thanks guys, my math skills arn't stellar but I did retain enough to only need one pre requisite algebra to get college algebra, the worst case scenario would have been 2 pre requisites.

lol I wish, I've always been lower class as far as finances go. Gov. is paying for this one with a pale grant

Also I like figuring out puzzles. I barely play Skyrim, I just like playing around with mods and such. Hoping maybe one day being able to do some programming for a video game, but that's just the dream aspect of my career choice I suppose.
