Is this man's argument concerning OpenGL correct?

Nope.

The PS3 used OpenGL too, which been working just fine. The reason why the PS3 versions of some games been noticeably worse compared to the 360 versions isn't because of OpenGL or the lack of DirectX. But because the RSX is weaker than the Xenos and other hardware related things, not software.

Time will tell. On the other hand, maybe OpenGL will get more of a foothold, which would be nice (speaking as a non-PS4 owner).

That guy is nothing but a Sony/Microsoft flamewar starter. Based on his opening and other videos I doubt any of his arguments are legitimate.

Not having speakers at work I can't watch the video, but I'm assumping the argument is something along the lines of "Teh Xbox Onezorz is supererior becuz It uses DirectX"

First of All, It's not known for sure the exact API Sony will use. All that is known is that it won't be DirectX since that's Microsoft tech. Most likely it'll be a modified OpenGL with potentially some sort of DirectX-like wrapper/code porter to help out in transition.

Secondly, it completely and utterly fails to recognize that game developers have been getting more experience with OpenGL due to Steam for Mac OS X and Linux (both of which likewise lack DX).

The argument is fundamentally flawed because the PS3 and PS2 (and PS1, though irrelevant since there wasn't a corresponding Xbox console at the time) also didn't have DX support, yet all had cross-platform games.

There will always be lazy developers that do half-assed jobs on ports and can't wean themselves off DX, though, but they won't be everyone.

I find his argument odd. He asks why Sony is using OpenGL when it's clear they can't license DirectX because Microsoft owns it. He also uses file formats to prove a point about converting from one API to another, which itself is a poor argument.

As I said, that video is nothing but flame-bait.

The only thing he got right was when he said "I am not a programmer." Then it fell apart after that.

This guy is not as bright as he thinks he is...

Why is Sony using OpenGL not DirectX?

Maybe because Micro$oft doesn't own OpenGL, heheh...

Well of course not. It's owned by a non-profit company and is an Open-source API.

Simple: OpenGL isn't bound by the operating system whereas DirectX is (using Windows API).

XB1 will have 3 operating systems running: Windows, XBox, and Kinect, and they'll share the API in some regard. Plus, why wouldn't Microsoft use their own tech?

The PS4 isn't bound by this restriction, since it'll only have its own proprietary system running on OpenGL.

In short: no one really loses but this guy who made the video.

I would really like to see more developers prioritize OpenGL. I own a mac with a windows partition and I roll over in joy when I find something I can put on my mac partition to avoid the reboot and save some partition disk space.

I am not a programmer.... ; )

But...

It seems to me that the results that you'll see on the PS4 and XBOX One will mostly have to do with what each individual developer can make of the software.

I have seen benchmark side-by-side comparison videos of openGL v.s. Directx11 where Dx out performs 2-1 in frame rate, but admitedly didnt seek out such videos as a topic of research, so they could be slanted

Dice, for example has said, because of their experience and integration of DirectX that the xbox will be the platform of choice. But another developer could just as eaisly claim the inverse.

While watching John Carmaks keynote this year he talked about being excited about what using tiled resources can bring, but admitedly I glaze over and get lost when listening to his talks and just end up gleening the jist of his presentations.

Direct x 11.2

Aparently a whole new ball game, utalizing the type of memory saving techniques via tiled resources that Carmak was talking about... der... I think?

Anyway it apparently has alot of computer software super geeks super excited and will allow a new level of graphics to those developers who decide to use it.

Again I'm just a layman when it comes to this sort of thing, so dont interpet this post as debate, argument or gospel.

Only a small quibble of a correction to an otherwise correct post.

The Xbox One's three OSes are Xbox OS, Modified-Windows NT (seems mostly for compatibility and use of Modern Apps built for Windows 8), and a hypervisor OS to make the two play nice together (something along the lines of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyper-V with http://pubs.vmware.com/workstation-9/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.vmware.ws.using.doc%2FGUID-8C477788-7700-4030-8C4A-039C02AABB74.html-like functionality). The Kinect doesn't need its own OS, thankfully.

That's pretty much it. It's not the program the game it written in, it's programmers making the game that's important.

No.

He starts by saying he is not a programmer. By saying that he says he have no idea what he is talking about.

He says all games and programs on windows uses DirectX, which is false.

Then he compares converting video and audio files is the same as "converting" DirectX to OpenGL. It's not the same thing.

To finish it he goes argumentum ad populum. More games uses DirectX therefore it's better.

Conclusion, he just wanted to talk [censored] about ps4.
