Mod user versus Mod developer

Post » Wed Aug 21, 2013 4:58 pm

This is kind of a rant but I invite comments. i want to hear on which side of the fence you sit.

Begin Rant

I am getting tired of people who only download mods calling themselves modders or insinuating that they are somehow modding Fallout 3. I hate to "be that guy" but it irks me that someone who has never spent a second in the GECK or Blender or GIMP or any other modding tool calls themselves a modder. They aren't modders, they aren't modding, not even close. They are mod users or simply users, right? Modders are the mod developers, the mod makers, the model makers and the texture artists, the ones with the talent and the ones who have scarified copious amounts of time and energy to create something new for others ti use freely. Mod users are akin to the unwashed masses who benefit from the generosity of the truly gifted modding community.

There is nothing wrong with just using mods, not everyone has the gumption or time commitment to create mods. But if you only download and play mods, please show a little respect to those who gave up weeks, months or even years developing all these wonderful mods by not lumping yourself in with them by calling yourself a modder. You aren't.

I don't want to see anymore of these kinds of threads...

"I Need help modding my game" - No you don't. You need help understanding how to install mods and how to avoid mod conflicts.

"New to Modding" - No you aren't. You are new to using other peoples mods and/or don't understand load orders.

"I've been modding for years and..."Nope. You have never modded once. You just came across a mod conflict that you can't solve yourself becasue you've never modded yourself and really don't understand how mods work.

Too harcore?

End Rant

Sure, there's a difference. But the attitude here feels a bit condescending.

I believe you're ranting unjustly.

The "mod" is in reference to the game, not the creator/user.

I've been on this forum for a little over a year, and I can tell the users from the programmers by their posts. When someone tells me they've "modded", I take this to mean they've altered the game. When a creator tells me about a mod, there's a sense of pride in what they've accomplished, happy many are using it.

Modders can mean someone who modifies their game, I don't think using the same word to mean a different thing means claiming to be the other thing the word refers too. Why so butthurt? It's not that big a deal of a word, like astronaut or something man, I mean, this isn't something people use to hit on girls as far as I know.

Your first two example threads are valid since they are using a mod, thus modding their game.

That said, there is a difference between mod users and mod makers, but your thread is coming off as very pretentious. I can usually tell who a modder is because as a user, most mod makers are very quiet and subtle about their posts. The only ones who cry it out loud publicly either want to look cool and call their use of mods as being modders themselves, the others rant how they're mod makers for attention.

Pointless semantics. Someone who is using mods is modifying their game. Hence, they are modders. Obviously it isn't the same as a mod creator who spends ungodly amounts of time making content for free to share with people who share their passion for a game.
