Will this game go down the SWTOR route?

Post » Thu Aug 22, 2013 4:04 am

Will they milk the subscribers on the first few months before inevitably going free to play like SWTOR?

Or do you think this game will actually be worth a subscription fee (unlike SWTOR) ?

Personally, I think subscription only means a more dedicated playerbase, a better community, compared to free players who come and go each day.

What we really needed was one more thread on this, thank you. ;)

But, seriously, the only reason people stop playing a game is because they get bored. If it is fun, they will play it.

So, it does not matter what the payment plan is, because it is the game that matters.

So, all we can do is wait and see.

No one knows, it's all speculation on our part, all depends on how good a job ZOS does with the updates and bug fixes and over all fun of the game, payment model has nothing to do with longevity of the game, time will be the answer to this question... I expect we will see lots of threads like this, sad really :(

I have no doubt this game will be just fine with a subscription. I'm honestly surprised more people didn't see the writing on the wall with SWTOR before it even came out, the game had little going for it other than a ton of money dumped in.

We cant really tell right know, P2P is the right way thats for sure, but the need to deliver us Content in the interview they said ever 4-6 weeks that would be great. SWTOR focused to much on full scoring, the game went boring in the lategame and so the player leaved the sinking ship.

I think Zenimax understands that and will deliver us Content and so i dont see it failing, still there is the possibility, that the game will be to easy, far to easy, that would also kill the best MMO in the world.

For SWTOR the devs had a plan [or something], and with EABioware had a plan [or something], and they seemed to be really determined to do what they planned.

No matter how many questions people on their forums raised. No matter how many issues the beta testers raised. No matter what.

So far the devs saw/heard that people thought fpv was important for an ES game. People wanted to be able to explore other faction's territory with their main/only character.

And we found out the Zenimax devs changed things. Fpv was made more of a priority. Higher level characters can go into other territories and open another whole faction worth of content.

In my opinion, TESO has at least one thing going for that SWTOR didn't/doesn't; devs that actually listen. Whether or not they will be able to do things is another question, but they do hear.

I am totally down for a subscription based ESO experience. They are going to make fist over hand money and have a fun time doing it and it will be a quality experience. I expect 5 million subscribers easily some are going to jump ship from the WoWTanic!!!

The fact that so many of the devs worked on some of the better examples of P2P games should be a good sign for hope. DAOC still rocking it hard, and beloved by its players. If nothing else they have proven themselves with the model atleast once and have earned the benefit of the doubt.

If they wanted my money right now to play it, I would. Beta or no beta.

I think you said the game might still be in the beta when we end up paying for it.

You have no basis to even think that. The beta is still early on and going for another 9 months, so let's not doom and gloom over it, shall we?

Well that simply depends on the game quality. SWTOR was crap because it was linear and had no substance and little to no end game. That has nothing at all to do with the payment model.

I can't say I know of many MMOs that will have had a Beta as long as ESO will have had before its released. They have plenty of time to polish and get it right, which is why they pushed back the initial 2013 release. They completely understand you really get ONE shot at making or breaking the game, I am glad they pushed it back and extended Beta.

Yes, that is exactly what I thought you meant.

Again, there is no reason to think the game will not be finished when it releases. It plays pretty smoothly from the videos so far and it is still 9 months away from release.

Usually I do not like bashing other games on posts, but let me highlight the deficiencies of SWTOR to illustrate why ESO will not go doen the same route

1) Bad material (sorry but the Star Wars franchise has been abysmal with the newer movies and it is trying to redeem itsself with the movies that are in production now)

2) EAbioware (not the same company that brought us great titles such as Baldur's gate, Bioware's merge with EA meant corporate bologna)

3) Terrible game mechanics, linear story, just a badly executed game

Nope, ZOS isn't associated with EA in anyway.

I think if they can meet this 4-6 week content burst, and produce content at this rate equal is size to, say, 3-4 hours, then I would say the sub fee is worth it. I seriously doubt they can pull this off .
