The classes and roleplaying.

Hello, I want to talk about the classes and my problems with them, largely from a roleplaying perspective.

My problem is that the Dragon Knight and Templar are ridiculously specific compared to the Sorcerer and Nightblade.

What do I mean by this? The Sorcerer and Nightblade are pretty wide outlines for what your character can become, the last time we saw the sorcerer(Oblivion) it was a mage wearing heavy armour, however for all intents and purposes it could be any kind of mage you wanted, the Sorcerer could be a Necromancer, a healer etc.

The Nightblade was a rogue who used several kinds of magic to to help him in a fight and open locks. Once again, the Nightblade had many directions he could go in, basically he's a sneaky person with some magic, plenty of room to roleplay.

However the problem lies with the other 2 classes, and especially the Dragon Knight, but we'll get to that later.

First we have the Templar, a battlemage... Or rather a Battlemage who uses sun magic(?), What is wrong with restoration and Destruction magic? Why do they use Sun magic? Where did they learn sun magic? Not to mention Sun magic is rather rare. The problem is that it narrows down roleplaying possibilities.

And then we have the Dragon Knight... So you want to be a Warrior or Battlemage but don't want to be a Sun magic using Templar, there is one option left(I know you can transform the Sorcerer and Nightblade into Battlemages but this is about the starting classes) the Dragon Knight... A user of Akaviri martial arts. So let me get this straight, if I want to be a warrior but don't want to be a Templar I am forced to use Akaviri martial arts? So warriors across all of Tamriel instead of being just warriors have to be Akaviri Dragon Knights, this makes no sense.

I have no problem with some players wanting to be special snowflakes, but why does everyone have to be one?

On top of that as we all can see, all of these classes use magic, what if I want to be a magic hating Redguard, or Orc? There are no alternatives.

Anyway, rant over.

How would I fix this? Either remove the class system entirely, they keep saying how classes don't matter and that they are just a starting point, so why keep them?

Or rename these classes and rework their skills a bit(Way too late for this, I know)

Ideally I'd like to see several new classes. Warrior, Thief and Mage. A Hobbit can dream.

Most MMO's take out many RP/immersion ability for the sake of the overall experience. Every game has a limit to roleplay, MMO's tend to have a lower limit. Even elderscrolls was not immune, In daggerfall, you have to completely ignore part of the story if you wanted to roleplay anyone but the Emperors champion. Skyrim forces you to join the mages guild to get access to the college for the main quest, and if you ever wanted to get the high level spells.

Of course certain liberties have to be taken when making an MMO but that does not excuse them using absurdly obscure classes to fulfil a role that could have been filled just as easily by classes which have been in the Elder Scrolls for ages.

I mean the equivalent of this for the Sorcerer class would be if they were called Shamans and they used Goblin magic for some reason.

The nightblade class is one of elder scrolls most famous classes. The templars seem to be paladins. Also, in oblivion and skyrim, EVERYONE, no matter how they decided to play, started out with at least 2 spells.

I didn't complain about the NIghtblade, and yes the Templars seem to be Paladins, or Crusaders. Except they use sun magic for some reason which they learned... somewhere.

maybe sun magic is an old fashioned, very specific name for magic used by Crusaders/priests?

Magicka has changed over the years on Tamriel some of the knowledge has been lost and some has been made anew. What I am saying is that maybe its a old type of magic like the Forsworn use that has largely been forgotten.

If they explain it well in the lore then the Templar wouldn't be too bad, however the real problem is the Dragon Knight.

You are not forced down the 3 skill lines for the Dragon Knight. You will have the fighters guild and mage guild skill lines. Both with passive and active abilities, as well as racial and pvp lines. From what I understand as well there are skills for armour and weapons as well.

So you could take the passives from Dragon Knight and use the melee or ranged from the weapons you are not using the martial arts of the Akavari then.

You dont roleplay a class, you roleplay a character...

Simple as that, just get over the imaginary boundries created by the class setup of this game.. because they are not there..

I doubt that'll be viable, nice if it works though. But I'll still be called a Dragon Knight.

Then you're going to have to deal with it. be happy this game has as much customization that it has. Most games make you choose warrior, thief, mage, and that is it.

Just use weapons skills, armor skills, fighters guild skills, ect. Don't use the class skills if you don't like them.

I think a good RP'er could write some explanation into their story for why their character uses Akaviri martial arts, but that's just me.

Sun magic isn't all that uncommon really and for all we know it might be prevalent in this time period. Templars also use restoration.

Is the idea that you want to make a pure warrior though? That seems to be the hardest thing to do. If you want a Battlemage, Sorcerer is the obvious choice.

Well yes, I was planning to play as a Redguard warrior(Swordsinger) and didn't really worry about classes, after all which MMO doesn't have a standard warrior class? Then I found out these 4 classes are all we'll be getting.

Obviously I can write my character's backstory around it but that doesn't mean I like it.

For what its worth, Redguards and Akaviri actually have very similar fighting styles. Both heavily influenced by Japan.
