Disarming

Post » Sat Aug 24, 2013 1:49 am

Ran into this last night playing Skyrim... an NPC used a Dragon Shout to disarm me, something I'd forgotten can happen. I scrambled to equip another weapon and after the fight had to look around to find my fallen weapon.

While it was an interesting tactic, I am not sure it can be applied to an MMO setting.

If it were, I would think that the disarmed weapon would drop into inventory - having it drop in the world could be problematical. Even if no OTHER player could pick it up and use it, what about NPCs? I may be thinking of the Fallout games, but I seem to remember NPCs picking up weapons that their allies dropped and I wouldn't be surprised if they could pick up a disarmed weapon, too. And then there's the chance you're fighting on a slope and your disarmed weapon then sliiiiiides down the mountainside into the bay and sinks into the dark.

Another concern is accessing inventory during combat. I don't know if it's even possible in ESO; from the videos I've seen, entering inventory pans the camera around so you see the front of your character and I can't see that being helpful IN COMBAT. After a certain level (5? 15?) you can swap to an alternate-weapon build, which would help in cases where ypur primary weapon was disarmed. Could be that the secondary build was designed as, eg, a healer build instead of a damage-dealing build, though. You'd be forced to drastically change your playstyle because you were disarmed.

While I don't PvP, there's also the question of what would happen if Player A could disarm Player B. I would think, again, that the weapon would drop into (inaccessible in combat?) inventory ---- Player A would not get to keep Player B's disarmed weapon. Even so, forcing a foe to change weapons could be a valuable tactic.

IF disarms are in the game at all, that is. :)

PS: Just remembered another incident in Fallout-3 where I shot the pistols out of the hands of the foes facing me, crippled their gun arms and then took my time finishing them off --- since a straight-up gunfight would have been suicide. Of course, you can't disarm a spellcaster.... not sure if they have anything equivalent to crippling limbs; possibly some kind of debuff effect would take the same role...

Edit: I saw single player and thought we had a lost poster. My bad. Disregard.

Disarm does exist in MMOs, it's not like the single player where it drops on the ground, it is just a "debuff" where you don't have a weapon equipped for a short period of time.

The item doesn't drop to the ground, or go into your inventory, it goes into limbo for a set time. In a game that offers PvP if the item was physically removed from the player and put into the inventory this can use major griefing within the game; something ESO is trying to stay away from.

No, it's the right thread... OP is just wondering how much of the single player experience will translate to MMO and the technicality of making it work.

Carry on OP! :)

Disarms, snares, slows, roots, knockbacks, mezzes...

All things that are spammed in PVP and make competitive PVP unenjoyable. Let's ditch all that and whack the living crap out of each other! :D

Rather than make another new thread, I'll just side track this one a bit... we can't drop items in the world in ESO?! But... but that means we cannot create massive sweet roll fortresses! I suppose simple Destroy, Move To Bank, and Trade options would take care of ways to get stuff out of your inventory.

Not always possible. SWTOR I played a marauder (equivalent of the dragon knight) and you get one unbinding ability with a 1 minute cooldown. When your movement/actions are being disabled for about 70-80% of the time (not exaggerating here, go play Huttball, I dare ya) you're on the field, you're going to die...a LOT...before that cooldown finishes. I could deal out some heavy damage, but since I was caught in snares and such most of the time, I was practically useless in PVP unless I was up against people playing a similar build as me.

that's the problem of tank characters :D you take the [censored] and rest finish the enemy while they got their abilities on cooldown.

Marauder is DPS mainly, but they can do some moderate tanking as well depending on the build. I played "balanced" so I could take a few more hits than your standard dps but still easily killed if I'm unable to move. ;)

While I think I'd hate being disarmed more, being snared / rooted is a close second. Less of a problem if I can use a spell or bow, of course... but it was SO aggravating to be pure melee and slooooowly moving toward a target that keeps moving out of range and casting on me.
