Can't decide on a next-gen gaming platform

Post » Sun Aug 25, 2013 11:20 am

I really cannot decide which platform to invest into for the next-generation of gaming. I currently use an Xbox 360, but have been rather envious of my PC gaming friends who can play indie hits like Minecraft and even have the awesome mod support for games such as Skyrim. Playing with them would also be nice, so all this makes me think about opting for a PC. However, then I think of the price, which is still more than a console. There's also the ease factor of a console, being able to simply lean back on the sofa and play games. But, even on consoles, I don't know which one I would be best with if I went this route. The Wii U has the new Sonic game, as well as Smash Bros and potentially Animal Crossing later. The Xbox has Fable (lacking lately, but I still like the series overall) and Forza. On the other hand, Sony has a better attitude arguably this new generation with a proper focus on gaming. I need some opinions. What should I do?

Wait until games are out you want to play, and decide. Trying to decide now to get a Xbox One or PS4 is kinda pointless if you're so unsure about it you want opinions from strangers, and because they aren't out yet.

Choose your console based on what exclusive games you would like to play the most. If you are concerned about customization then buy or build a PC.

Well, the thing is, I'm not even sure if console gaming is right for me. My friends are all on PC, which also has mods. It also has better graphics, but I'm not factoring that in because that is subjective to the system you build.

The PC does get "exclusives" too, although they aren't referred to as so. There are plenty of games that never make it to consoles, such as StarCraft 2, or if they do it is in a gimped form a la Minecraft.

I love StarCraft 2, Minecraft (modded), some of the Skyrim mods look awesome, and I'd love to be able to play with my friends. The biggest off-put is the price.

I've already decided. I'm just going to use the money I would have spent on a next gen console and buy/build a computer (granted it'll cost more than a console so that's only money going towards the new computer). I have nothing against console users (so this isn't a console vs. pc post) but for me my Xbox is pretty much only used for watching Netflix and playing DvD movies anymore.

Yes it can be more expensive initially. A couple years later you can get a 20% - 50% faster video card for about 1/5 of the initial total cost of building another PC and still see a worthwhile upgrade. The same can be said about the CPU a couple more years later. You can really extend the life of a PC.

I know. In fact, the games seem to be cheaper also, especially with Steam sales and whatnot. It's just that initial investment. Even a low-end PC with the bare minimum for comfortable gaming is going to be at least £100-£150 more than an Xbox One.
