Gauging Interest For New YouTube Channel Concept..

Post » Sat Sep 07, 2013 5:27 am

Hi Guys,

First and foremost, I'd like you to know that this post is not about plugging my YouTube channel with you guys. It's not ready to go yet. I'm really just making this post to see what you guys think of the concept and if it's something you feel you might enjoy watching?

I currently play Skyrim on the PS3, and plan to restart my game to possibly capture and upload gameplay to YouTube.

When I play Skyrim, I enjoy being immersed in the world. To help make everything feel even more immersive for myself, I avoid fast travel, and don't needlessly run long distances. Cause in reality, no one is going to run all day and night to get to the next major city, right? I also play according to the day/night cycle in the game. My character always goes to sleep at approximately midnight, and wakes at 8am to begin a new day.

Here's a list of some things that could be expected in my videos...

  • All needless menus are cut out of the videos. This means, switching weapons and spells are seamless, map viewing and leveling menus are removed, dialogue options are trimmed in time so you don't have to wait for me to cycle through all options, looting corpses has no menu, you just hear the sound that indicates I took something, etc etc etc...
  • Each episode shows one day of my life in the world of Skyrim. Episodes fade out when I go to sleep, and new episodes fade in when I wake up the next morning.
  • Due to the above ^ - Each episode can last anywhere from 30 - 45 minutes.
  • There is no commentary.
  • The YouTube videos are not monetized, so all music and in game content is preserved.

I have an unlisted video temporarily up for you guys to take a look and let me know if you think this is something the community may be interested in...

Go to YouTube, and add this to the end of theURL to see it: watch?v=MNij7z0Lcvw

^^ Please note, this is a temporary video for you guys only. It will be taken down soon, and does not depict the final quality of the videos.

Thoughts? Advice? Critique?

Any feedback you provide would be helpful.

Thanks in advance guys!

It's good that you want to upload yourself playing Skyrim, but when its a video of 30-45 minutes, there has to be commentary.

Thanks for such quick feedback. Is your opinion from a legal or entertainment standpoint?

If you're speaking for the sake of being entertaining and engaging, I agree.

The issue I'm experiencing is that I also want to maintain a strong level of immersion. My ramblings over the in game dialogue, soundtrack, and combat, would kind of kill that. So, which of the following do you think would be best?

  1. Take each day and split into shorter segments of 8-10 minutes with no commentary.
  2. Take the role of my character and provide his voice acting.
  3. Your alternative suggestion?

Feedback from the common viewer. You should always go with that you think is best. Maybe add some variety. In some you do commentary, in others you don't.

As to those options...

8-10 minute videos would be a good idea I think. You decide there.

Maybe on occasion RP as you're character by providing its voice.

But don't let one person change your mind, it would be best to hear from other as well.

Oh, of course. But being that I don't personally observe YouTube players regularly myself, any feedback helps. And already, your feedback is in line with my concerns as I started to put things together.

Seamlessly transitioning weapons is cool and looks great. But, when I replayed, it was a snore fest, so I wanted to know what peeps enjoy when observing YouTube gameplay outside of comical commentary. Ya Know?

So far, I am leaning towards your advice of trimming the size of the videos and voice acting the parts (complete with grunts in battle, monologues while traveling, and lending a voice to conversations with NPCs).

If you have any more advice to lend, please feel free to do so. Every bit helps me out, as this is my first attempt at not only gameplay of Skyrim on YouTube, but YouTube entirely. :)

Anyone else with advice to lend too?

So you want to make a Skyrim LP right? Go head try, you already said that you will use editing so that puts you way above of many other lpers in my mind but personally Skyrim and elder scrolls in general don't make a good lp material, combat isn't really impresive to watch and the biggest asset of game exploration is gone if you just watch someone else exploring.

Voice acting, meh it really depends on numerous things but if you go with it don't grunt it always ends up unintentionaly comical, and theres limit to how much you can monologe before it becomes tedious.

Thanks guys!

Gotcha. Limiting monologue makes a lot of sense. But, for long segments of travel, I'm thinking it may be wise to incorporate some of it so I can use video editing to shorten the trip with fades and what not. I'm sure that would be better than watching me walk for 30 minutes. What do you think?

In regards to grunting, I agree. I am a pro-audio engineer though, so if I can't pull it off, it definitely won't be there.

Agreed. I am going to start on PS3, but will eventually convert the save to PC, and start using mods as I progress. I built my new gaming PC, but ran out of funds for a graphics card and also looking forward to Elder Scrolls Anthology.

However, I'm predominantly a console gamer and intend to do more than just Skyrim, so I figured learning and tweaking using my external capture device (Elgato) would be the best way to start while I wait for funds to continue investing in the project.

Thanks for the feedback guys! Please keep it coming. I'm already learning a lot about preference from you guys.
