What. Make a great and MMO?

Post » Thu Sep 12, 2013 6:21 pm

I was wondering your opinion on what makes great mmo's ,taking existing aspects (the good ones)and making it better and adding more aspects( like Wildstar) or Completely reversing The wheel( Like the Elder scrolls online).

let's talk about the Big boy World of Warcraft, World of Warcraft was successful because it copied The good Parts of EverQuest and Improving and reintegrating the bad.

Let's talk about GW2 Reinventing the mmo Game space but it Failed, Rift copied the good of World of Warcraft and Improving and improving the Bad Just like World of Warcraft did but it failed. So I'm kind of confused on what Mmo's should do, it can't completely we innovate the wheel like GW2, But they also can not do what wow did when it came out.

I would like to know what you think about this topic and can you help me get out my out of my confused nature about the Mmo's.

Hey sorry about the Title of the thread, When I noticed I jacked up on it it was too late.

Okay let me Put it this way GW2 Did not fail but it is not good as people predicted , Riftdid not fail but it was not good as people predicted.

I think what makes a 'Good' MMO is entirely subjective, my opinion on a good MMO will be different to yours, but some aspects I think that make a good MMO is firstly an interesting, gripping and immersive story and lore, for example WoW up until MoP was a brilliant story for me, exploration is important for me too. Then all the other aspects like combat mechanics, I like what ESO is doing with the mouse as attack.

A good MMO is the ability to connect to the server without things crashing.

Now, what a good game is, is entirely subjective but in my opinion the real question to ask, MMO is merely a framework to connect thousands of people to the same game and not a set of gameplay features. The focus should be on the game and how it takes advantage of the MMO framework, not the other way around.

And I understand that MMO have somehow become the word for a new genre which I think is unfortunate because it brings a set of (unrealistic) expectations on everything that is labeled MMO instead of it being just a prefix to better indicate that it's a game built around a social structure in gamedesign terms.

It depends.. I absolutely adore Darkfall even its 1.7mill dollar game for example, but then again everyone seems to play WoW... I personally think MMO genre is pretty much failed, WoW keep its grip and Titan is gonna make it even stronger.

A dependable system that continues to offer an ever evolving dynamic challenge. If the players don't feel like they are accomplishing anything and enjoy the experience, they won't play.

community plays a big part. i feel like WoW continues to be successful just because of the herd mentality.
