Something that I always loved and appreciated in TES:3 was the ability to write your own notes on the map, so that you could mark the location of specific things that you would like to come back to, or just to remind yourself of something that happened. It made me feel so immersed in the exploration component, especially with the lack of fast travel.
It occurs to me that I don't think I've ever had the pleasure of seeing anything even remotely similar to that in any other game.
But I would like to see it taken further than just map markers. I want to be able to craft my own adventure. I feel like that's what The Elder Scrolls games have always been about. And when I think about the idea of a "journal" or a map, I just don't imagine it the way that it often ends up mechanically in games.
What I do see is this:
- A Map that you can add your own notes and points of interest to, so that it best fits your needs and interests. Your map is meant to guide you, and you should be able to make it do that in the way that best suits you.
- A Journal that allows you to create your own notes, both within and without the quest log, so that you can better keep track of the information that is given to you, in the way that suits you best.
I also have some other related ideas such as leaving notes for other players, or public message boards. TES:O is shaping up to be a living world full of individuals, and what I'd like to see more than anything is more fun and interesting ways that everyone can interact with the world and customize their experiences. Feedback is welcome!
