News Article idea for the ESO website

Post » Wed Oct 09, 2013 7:49 am

This is a suggestion to ZOS for a new article idea on the ESO website.

I thought it would be fun if the website would feature a few mini-interviews with developers about their favorite design elements in the game, or their favorite faction, or favorite piece of lore. Hopefully this could be done without breaking NDA.

Anyone else have any ideas for cool articles they would like to see on the official website?

Well, there's a LOT of stuff they need to cover in more depth on the site.

To name a few...

Adventure zones, the veteran system, more on how vampirism and lycanthropy work, almost every single topic that they respond to with a "we'll go more in depth" and "more details in future".

Because they aren't fully fleshed out yet. It's not a good thing to release information on things that aren't even finished or have the possibility to change.

Blizzard was notorious on releasing things they were going to add for each new expansion in WoW, and then a few months later they would say, "Sorry we won't be adding it anymore because we just didn't have the time." Yeah, not many fans were happy when Blizzard would say they would be adding these features and fully explain how they would work and then scrap them a few months later. I'd prefer developers wait till things are almost 100% ready before they release information on them.

At the same time, ZOS needs to make sure that they don't go so far down the "We can't talk about that just yet" path that they look like Bioware 2.0. Its a rather narrow path they're walking, but I'd rather they give too much info out and have to say, "Oops. That won't happen after all," than say nothing and hope we're surprised. Sure, Blizzard took some heat for their cancelled features, but not nearly as much as Bioware took for never talking about anything. And, as much as people like to sneer at the so-called entitled gamer (god, I hate that term. I really wish people would stop overusing a phrase, especially one that's inaccurate), gamers are generally pretty understanding about features that won't make it due to time or money constraints. They'll be disappointed, sure, but the loud "How dare you not include it you svck" crowd are a minority.

But the thing is that most of these features he listed probably aren't fully fleshed out yet. I mean, look at the Adventure Zones, they weren't even planning on adding them into the game at launch, but now are because of player feedback. They just started working on them a few months back, I'm sure they don't even truly know how exactly they are going to fully work yet. No point talking about that system yet.

And what should they say about Vampires/Werewolves? We already know they have their own skill lines attached to them and that they don't want to give much information about them because they want us to discover them for ourselves.

The Veteran System was something they just released for us. How long has it been in the works? Has it been something they have had planned in the beginning or was it just a recent feature that they just added? Is what they told us all they can right now because that is how far it's be implemented?

Yes, they shouldn't just keep saying, "we will go more in-depth on it later," but fans need to realize that somethings aren't even fully ready yet for them to talk about, and somethings they just want to straight up keep a secret so that it's fun for them to discover it.

Oh, I hear ya on that. Like I said, its a very fine line these poor buggers have to walk. I'm just of the opinion that its better to release info that has to be retracted later than to keep the fans in the dark. That being said, I should be fully honest here and admit that I'm not sure how much of this opinion is based on what's fair to us, and how much is based on "I WANT TO KNOW NOW GIVE ME THE INFO OR I'LL HOLD MY BREATH AND DIE AND THEN YOU'LL BE SORRY."

I never claimed that I was always rational.

Hah, nah I get you dude. I'm sure everyone is sitting here waiting to hear more about the game, and it does svck that ZOS is withholding a ton. It would be nice if they would trickle more information towards us, and I was expecting, being this much closer to launch, that they would. But at the same time of the type of person who doesn't like hearing that they will have this feature in the game and then take it away. I'd rather hear about a feature that is solidly going to be in the game.

I was pleasantly surprised that Zenimax choose to hold back from announcing this game earlier. They have kept the pre-game scrum to a minimum and I think they would have preferred to hit the original release window and have all this web drama done with.

But as to the OP I think that idea would be a great feature series of articles that could last until release. The AuA is a HUGE communication tool but a snip-it of dev-log once a month would also be nice. I like your suggestion :)

I think i mentioned to them on FB a dev diary would be nice at some point, but i guess with the conventions and the beta testing going on lately something like that might have to wait if they decide to do it. Closer to launch would be cool so we could get to know each dev and how they think.

Spring isn't all that far away at this point, especially given that they actually have to test this stuff. Some things have to be finished or they are going to end up releasing a game completely barren of anything but the most basic content.

And the game could be pushed back again if they don't feel like it's ready.

Vampries/Werewolves are in the game already, Vetern System is also, Adventure Zones are getting worked on now. That doesn't mean they aren't fully fleshed out yet. I'm sure most of the basics for everything is done, they just don't have them fleshed out and want to make sure they are before they release information on them.
