Question to ferret owners out there

Post » Mon Oct 14, 2013 7:10 am

Ok so I have a quetsion and it is mostly for those who have cats as well. I have been wanting a ferret for a while and I have found one for 50 bucks, cage and grooming supplies included. However I have a full grown female cat and I am wondering how she will react to it. Also how the ferret would react to her. I have heard that ferrets and cats get along relatively well, also since they are both predators they wont try to eat each other. Also is it a lot of work keeping them from smelling to bad? I have heard it is not healthy to get rid of their scent glands. Do they have to stay in their cage most of the time or can they wander freely? I know they are among the most curious animals in the world, so I have read that you are supposed to block off any small gaps they may try to climb into. I am sure my cat will be uncomfortable with any new animal in the house but she should get used to it, I just don't want to put to much stress on her.

You might want to keep that ferret out of any corners, they have a habit to [censored] in them.

I bought a ferret back when I was in junior high school. Great pet and very friendly; however, they will always have a sort of musky odor, even with the scent glands removed.

Be sure to take good care of it. Mine caught Canine Distemper and died. That was.....probably one of the most painful things I had to watch in my life. Red, my ferret, just went from bad to worse. I'm glad his suffering is over now but just reliving it in my head makes me want to break into tears again. Imagine watching your ferret suffer seizures that got worse and worse as he got closer to the end having to hear him crying outloud, liquid diarrhea and him running into walls because he couldn't turn his body and finding him after coming home from the store to find him cold and dead from a seizure. Yeah, that's how bad that disease is. Just typing it out made me tear up but it's an awful virus with a near 100% fatality rate.

I didn't mean to write a paragraph here, but I don't want anyone else to end up going through that heartache that I had to endure watching my ferret die.

My cat died last night. But I found it walking around this morning, so it's all good. :)

I've been thinking about getting a ferret for a while now, but I have a skittish dog and two cats that don't get along with each other. Also, I feel I don't know enough to properly take care of one. Oh, and everyone else I live with would be annoyed by the stench. And I'm sure where I live isn't exactly the best place for such a curious animal to freely roam about.

Oh well.
