Ordered a Genetic Testing Kit

Post » Fri Oct 18, 2013 12:32 pm

I've been interested in doing this for some time and as the test have become more refined over the years I finally decided to go for it. I chose one sponsored by https://genographic.nationalgeographic.com/as part of a project they're doing on human genetics and migration patterns. The test gives a breakdown by percent on one's racial makeup plus the percentage of Neanderthal genes. Its fine-tuned enough now they can give information on what subgroups you descended from within those races (Northern European, Mediterranean, etc...). I'm pretty excited about it - I hope my background is quite varied (supposedly we have a little Native American ancestry in my family and I'd like to know now much).

Have any of you had this type of testing done? Any considering it? I'm curious if it met your expectations.

I'd love to have this done on myself. If you're willing to share, how much did it cost? It would be pretty cool to find out how much Neanderthal I have in me.

$199 isn't bad. It would be worth it to me just to find out the truth of my ancestry. My whole life I was told I was descended from Irish immigrants, so one day I googled my last name and it turned out my family name at least is actually Welsh (I didn't know where Wales was until then), so it would be cool to learn the truth about where I come from.

And, it would be nice to put all those stupid rumors my family has about being part Cherokee to rest as well. Not that there is anything wrong with being of Native American descent, and it wouldn't bother me if I was. Its just that I personally have my doubts about it. Where I'm from, everyone claims to be part Cherokee, and I don't see how its possible. Considering the people that live here are the descendants of the people that either a) killed them to steal their land or B) drove them off to steal their land, I don't see how it would possible for that much interbreeding to take place.
