Please make naming your character FIRST not LAST!

Post » Sat Oct 19, 2013 12:41 pm

This is a fairly simple request, but one that many developers often drop the ball on.

In light of the BEAUTIFUL and AWESOME character creation video, I would like to request that the first thing you do in character creation is reserve your character's name. Normally this is the last thing done during character creation but because of the long process for many it will be to create their highly detailed character and the amount of TES players who will likely have specific character names that they are committed to.

Because we can't necessarily predict whether ZOS will do some kind of name reservation service or not, I think this would be the next best thing.

Please let us input and confirm our names BEFORE delving into the depths of the character creator for hours on end.

I see your concern. However i think that it is HIGHLY unlikely that your character name will already be chosen.

As you said, RPers are as connected to their in-game name as they are to their own name. This means, i think, that your name will most likely be "special", just like mine. I simply cannot imagine anyone taking the name i have in mind (yes, in mind  ), simply because it's a highly unusual name, or so i believe.

Thus i will conclude that your concern may not be a real threat to your name of choice.

However: why the hell not. doesn't hurt anyone after all.

The only real benefit here would be to beat others to your chosen name. Assuming that you're not going for something like "Tiber Septim", you should be okay. I really don't think there's going to be *that* much overlap for it to be an issue. That said, I can see no harm in the idea (assuming it is easy to implement), so would have no issue with this being implemented. I too have my name already picked out, so it would be nice to get the easy part out of the way first.

In every MMO I've played I had to make up new names for at least 15 minutes because everything I tried was already taken, it's a very real problem which could be solved by also having a last name. (As far as I know last names are optional right now and won't matter)

Indeed. I believe many underestimate what the launch day fury will be like. Many people will simply be reserving names, filling up all their character slots, to sell them later. This happens in all major MMO releases right off the bat.

I think if they don't want to do name reservations for pre-orders, then this would be a nice thing in lieu. My character's name will likely not be taken, but I am more concerned for some who have more common names is all.

I can only hope they alleviate a lot of that by banning some of the more obvious ones. "sheogorath", "pelinal" etc.

Yeah I have no doubt they will do that, but I'm talking about simpler, non-lore names, but even then, if your name is very generic you are kinda asking for it...

Yeah, why not. The thing that I loath about a lot of MMO's is having to sit there for 10 minutes making up new names.

Personally, I think it'd just be best for ZOS to let us have the ability to reserve our names, but I doubt that'll happen, so this is probably the next best thing.

I have to agree with the name first. That way the character name is locked to you and you can comeback whenever you want to change the appearance before starting the actual game. At least the name you wanted would be saved for you though.
