What % of crimes happen at night versus daytime?

Post » Wed Oct 30, 2013 4:15 pm

My google-fu svcks, I can't find a definite compilation of statistics(especially an over-all one) that shows what % of crimes happen during the day versus the night. My oldest daughter, irrationally(she's 10 for crying out loud) is going through a "I'm scared of the dark" phase, and I'm trying to show her that there is nothing to be scared of during the night, at least nothing that isn't there during the day. She brung up the point "Well criminals can sneak up on you at night time", and refused to listen when I said "They can sneak up on you during the day as well". So I'm trying to find some different ways of showing her that night-time(and more importantly, darkness) is nothing to be scared of.

I have no facts, but odds are they'll rob you during the day when the kids are at school and the parents at work. I think it's far less likely for someone to rob you at night when you're likely home.

That said...some spooky stuff does happen at night.

I think the best way to approach this is the honest dad approach. Just tell her it can be scary at night, but it's also scary in the day too. You might be able to SEE likely threats in the day, but bad things happen, the important issue is to learn how to avoid getting trapped in scary situations.

Just factor in white collar crime and you can probably bring down that percentage quite a bit ;)

Not an expert but I'm sure 100% of crimes committed at night are really shady.

I looked through my sources to shed some light on this, but I couldn't find anything. Oh well, it was a shot in the dark anyways.
