Could someone look on my Statement of Purpose?

Post » Thu Oct 31, 2013 3:14 pm

I am currently applying for exchange law studies from Sweden to Canada, and I just finished my first version of my Statement of Purpose. It would be really nice, and appreciated, if someone had a look at it and gave their thoughts if I should change anything, etc. The due date is tomorrow evening. The space restriction is one page of normal space size, and what is written below is what fits exactly in it. It can't be any sentence more. The exchange studies will cover one semester (it can cover more, but I choose not to, since my own education would be far too long then...).

I should also note that whether we get accepted to exchange law studies is decided from our grades. Only if there is someone who has the same grade as you, will be SoP decide if you get in or not. So the importance of the SoP is therefore quite reduced.

Spoiler

I am applying for exchange studies at the University of X in order to pursue my goal in working at a law firm within the field of business law at an international level. My ambition is to work in an environment where I can contribute with the knowledge I have gained from the Law Program, including these exchange studies, and where I can grow as a lawyer.

After having studied international law and comparative law this spring as part of the Law Program at Z University, and after having attended the Y Law Summer Program, my interest for the international aspects of the law has broadened. Moreover, in an increasingly globalized world with more businesses expanding abroad, corporate and commercial lawyers must be equipped with the necessary expertise required to understand legal and business concepts from an international perspective. For these reasons, my intention is to study courses such as AA and BB.

With its Faculty of Law recognized as one of the leading law schools in the world, and with a strong student body in a culturally diverse city, the University of X provides a professional and engaging environment for legal studies. This, together with Canada having close bilateral relations with Sweden, has driven me to apply for exchange studies at the University of X. In addition, with Sweden being a civil law country, and Canada, being primarily a common law country, I believe that the exchange studies will bring a unique, enlightening perspective on the law as a whole.

Previously, I have attended the Y Law Summer Program in YY, where I, inter alia, studied CC. This has provided me with an understanding of the fundamentals of international business policy, which I aspire to expand by studying topics in international commercial law at the University of X.

Since my goal is to work at a business law firm at an international level, the knowledge and experience acquired from the topics in international commercial law at the University of X would help me to understand and approach legal issues from different aspects. For instance, it would help me in applying international trading regulations and in understanding the legal and economic consequences of the decisions that companies make across the borders. By attending the Faculty of Law at the University of X, I therefore hope to gain a wider perspective on the law, embarking on the next step of my future career as a lawyer.

Yours faithfully,
