To our Brits: Rate the British Empire out of 10

Wanted to hear what our friends in the Isles thought of this period in Britannia's history.

Massive ups and downs. Ridiculous taxing on the American Colonies (The revolution was necessary and deserved) and the raiding of India and racism.

But if the British Empire didn't fight, Germany would have won World War II. And what would the world be if the British didn't sew the seeds for the United States?

I'd rate it 7/10. Proud of the success, and at least we didn't let the Spanish have Australia and America. And obviously the British did modernize a lot of the world. Of course we did unify 20% of the world... Ruled the sea... Brought the New World to the modern age...

I could go on and on. But I know out Empire was incredibly successful. After empires fall, the host nation often falls with it. But Britain is still in the top ten nations in the world. Even after fighting everywhere around the world for 600 years, even after two World Wars against far greater adversaries (that we beat anyway).

7/10 for the order we brought

Look at the state of the world ever since the Empire broke apart

Funny fact, the British Empire was never officialy dissolved, it still technically exists, just not as huge as it used to be

Responsible for the creation of the modern world and ensuring our country's place in the world both then and now. The world is a constant struggle for power and prosperity, the Empire gave us that and - though in the decline - for ensuring our position now. People in the world will always be doing [censored] to each other, better us than them. Here's hoping for the best for ourselves and all our true colonial brothers out there. The legacy of Empire will only die when we let it, as it is I am happy to call anyone beneath the Crown my brother; hopes of Federation are long dead unfortunately but I keep them in my heart as both a Brit and a servant of the Crown.

So... 9.5/10 or 10/10 I presume.

Definitely, the Empire spread Parliamentary democracy, decent sports and education through-out the world. It's not all about being dikes to natives, I shudder to think how many hospitals out there are named after Queen Victoria.

The British Virgin islands, two airbases in Cyprus, a few other West-Indies islands, the Ascension islands, the Pitcairn islands, Gibraltar, Christ he had Hong Kong up until 1997. The Empire is not dead, as long as we have nuclear weapons we are a major power.

I have to disagree here. Cricket is not a decent sport!

If you want to count the US as "collateral damage" then they pretty much made the entire world as we know it today.

On balance I think we did more good than harm. That doesn't mean we should gloss over things like the Opium Wars or forget that the primary motivation was wealth and power, not doing good.

Considering the trends it left us up until this day? I better not say. Better than a lot of European Colonial Empires, although it was still a pretty big [censored].

Trends?

Is that because the U.S. made the world today or because to Americans the U.S. is the world? ;)
