Have we become a society too afraid of criticism?

Post » Sun Nov 10, 2013 6:30 am

So, crawling about on the internet, I notice how more sites seem to be pushing towards integrating a way to filter or hide negative or dissenting opinions. Also, you have developers, modders and general artists or video creators who flip their tables when someone points out a negative, even if it's a valid and constructive complaint and seem to only want to hear positive reviews.

Is this all just my opinion or do you all feel this is becoming a growing trend in the recent years?

People get butthurt way too easily nowadays, and they're fighting it at the expense of our freedom of speech. Our democratic values are slowly degenerating!

I think it isn't so much that society is too afraid of criticism, rather that the internet can be too critical. And not in a constructive way, either. As more of a creator's early life migrates toward the mostly anonymous internet and away from focused, personal audiences like friends and classrooms, criticism received becomes more negative and less helpful. You get a lot of people who don't really know what they're talking about shooting down ideas and projects just because they don't like them. It's kind of a shell-shock, and not always healthy for development.

I think moderatorship, rather than censorship, is the way to go, but social media is so huge that it's not practical. The big cheeses running it just want a quick, cheap bandaid.

No.

Thanks to the Internet, whiners and fringe cases are much more noticable. That's what those are. It's not the common reaction. For the most part, censoring opinions isn't seen as being a good thing, even if they are negative opinions/views.

So as a whole, society isn't, but there always have and always will be those that can't take any sort of criticism.

Which is kind of what I'm getting at. Even then you have people who say 'Please give your opinion.' but get angry if it's not an opinion they like. It's fine to discard 'lol ur videeo suks loozr', but when people get pissy over fair criticism it's ridiculous. Like you, let's say you ask for critique on...a video on Youtube you post, I say 'It's an OKAY video, but your video has poor camera control and the writing of the video could have been better done, it felt a little rushed.' and you fly off the handle and say 'Please continue, my good sir. you stupid troll!', that's the kind of thing I see more and more of and it's stupid because how can one ever improve their work if they never accept criticism?

@DEFRON- Oooooh, you make a good point. I hadn't considered that angle. :o

That hurt my butt's feelings---it's sensitive :P.

I do agree people nowadays are a little to soft when it comes to being criticized or judged I'm no exception, I filter my comments on my YouTube (until YT messed up the comments, but that's another thread) videos, heck I even turned off the thumbs up and down ratings. I did it cause I get more thumbs-down trolls then I do thumbs up and that can detour a lot of viewers, also people will just thumbs-down a video for no reason w/o giving a reason so I silenced those people. So now if a person likes the video they'll just have to tell me in the comments sections now...however I filter those and although I do allow some critic posting---if they're flaming----they don't get posted.

If anything it seems to me that there is often too MUCH criticism, in some areas. Government in particular -- there are far more people who complain about how poorly the government runs than there are people who actually have any idea how it could be better. And for all the criticism we dish out, it never actually results in improvements.

Criticizing someone's youtube video or whatever is much different though, of course.

It is not so much afraid of criticism, more the way that criticism is presented. With the freedom and availability of the internet almost anyone can jump on and post, unfortunately a great amount of it is not constructive but rather more a tirade of bad language, vulgarity and puerile remarks.

Criticism has always been there and most places would welcome thought out and civil discussion, unfortunately it is being seen less and less.

Other - I'm afraid of having what I say be misunderstood, prompting me to explain(and they still have a problem with it).
