Worried about Terrain: The mountains should not change much

Post » Sat Nov 23, 2013 7:41 am

Anyone else worried that Elder Scrolls Online is not going to have much in the way of recognizable terrain? This game takes place about 700 or so years before Morrowind. Mountains do not change much in 700 years. Look at our planet.

I don't expect Seyda Neen but I do expect there to be an area where it was and a mountain surrounding it on the eastern and northern sides of it.

I do expect a couple, long, narrow valley areas surrounded by mountains in the middle of the map.

The same should go for Skyrim. I really hope the center of the map has a huge, open area like Rohan, where Whiterun is now.

Anyone else concerned about this?

Yes I believe they will have terrain diversity... I mean??? I'm not really too worried, I think the world will look great, and I bet there will be mountains and hills and plains, and I don't understand your concern :[

Maybe worried the terrain might look too self-similar, like over-used textures? I could believe it, a lot of the recent ES games seem to have similar envirnments. I mean sooo much ASH in Morrowind, soooo much SNOW in Skyrim, and sooooo much medival europe in Oblivion.

Lol, oh well I love Tamriel, and I am honestly excited to see their interpretation of the vast lands of Tamriel. :D

Perhaps I did not explain myself. When I am in certain areas I except mountains to be on a certain side. I know Morrowind very well. I really hope that the mountains are mostly in the right places. I do except some change, as the island is volcanic, but major changes to mountains on a geographical timeline takes hundreds of thousands of years.

Whiterun was founded when Ysgramor's Companions discovered the Skyforge, long before the events of ESO. Many other cities, especially capitals, are similarly old.

I don't understand why you worry about mountains not being there. The devs wanted to create a familiar environment, not only show us something new but also take us to places we know and love. There's no reason to drastically change the landscape, I'm sure most mountains will be in the same place. Rivers and lakes probably too, even though they could have changed a bit in several centuries.

Actually, if things hold true, we won't be spending much time in the part of Morrowind you're familiar with, if any at all. Vvardenfell should be off limits, so we will see a lot more of the mainland areas that weren't actually in ES III.

But so far, all the screenshots look like how I expect them to, with the possible exception of the Aldmeri areas, which look fairly plain. But the Covenant lands look great, Morrowind has its mushrooms, Skyrim looks like Skyrim and the festering swamp looks suitably nasty.
