Level Cap and Lateral Progression

Post » Wed Dec 04, 2013 4:48 am

Hi everyone.

This discussion was also briefly in another thread that I wanted to pursue, though purely for continuation of Endgame. I could not post this in another thread because I feel it warrants its own discussion and would hijack said thread.

We know that after level 50 we continue to progress, collect skyshards, veteran points, etc.

Leveling is assumed to take around 200 hours per factions, for a total of ~600 hours of character progression. We can probably collect skyshards from other faction areas as well.

I suppose my question would be: If an expansion were released, would you prefer more levels, or skill trees? Forward or lateral progression?

The question is made not for leveling, or to change the current mechanics. It is for expansions and new content from developers with the idea of the current leveling system in mind. I am wondering the efficiency of lateral progression at end game, because what is keeping players from hoarding skill points and spending them every content drop? Soon that's going to be the standard that everyone will have to do to stay on par in PvP (because really, nobody wants to not be comptetitive even for a few days), unless they add some dumb new skill point thing every expansion pack.

Though I am also on the fence of new levels, because they probably will not mean anything without a significant boost every level after 50. My current example is epics from vanilla Warcraft and greens from the Burning Crusade. It is just a completely useless treadmill having your work destroyed and rebuilt every expansion; I was sick of it soon. I suppose this problem would be solved by non-intricate raiding-like things that do not grant high level gear?

Please keep the discussion Civil!
