BEARS!!!

No, not the Stormcloaks and their "Bear of Markarth," but your average, run of the mill Cave Bears. I was leaving Riften to do some work for the Thieves Guild and I accidentally stumbled upon a grand total of 5 Cave Bears, and being at a low level with my only weapon being an untempered dagger and hardly any levels in One-Handed, I was forced to take to my heels and run like mad in the opposite direction.

As I fled for my life, praying to any and all of the Divines and Daedra and anyone I thought could hear me to offer me some form of salvation, I suddenly found myself sprinting headlong into a group of Imperials and Stormcloaks charging each other to do battle. I ran past them and found my way up some rocks, where I quickly guzzled an invisibility potion and crouched to see what would happen.

To summarize, before either side could lay a hand on the other, they were bum rushed by all five bears, and despite all of the invoking of Ysmir's name, not a single Nord managed to walk away from the conflict alive, nor did any of them succeed in killing a single bear.

Now my thief, being an insufferably greedy bastard, quickly made his way down the cliff face to reap the spoils of the hard fought (and lost) battle he so bravely ran away from. Just as he finished prying the last bit of sellable loot from a dead soldier's body, he looked up to notice that all the bears were still there, and the bear-centric episode of the Benny Hill Show resumed, probably as some kind of karmic punishment for stealing goods from fallen soldiers.

This continued for roughly 90 seconds until I came across members of the Thalmor and Stormcloaks squaring off. The Thalmor managed to take out one Nord with magic attacks before the Stormcloaks could close the distance, but once again everybody else was brutally savaged by what had to be the most malicious bears I have ever met in this game. All of which miraculously survived until my thief sniped them using a bow he had stolen off the dead.

So the final tally of the Civil War tonight seems to be:

Imperials: 0

Stormcloaks: 0

Thalmor: 1 Dead Female Stormcloak

Cave Bears: 3 Dead Male Legionairres, 4 Dead Male Stormcloaks, 1 Dead Female Stormcloak

My Thief: About 2500 gold to be had in mostly unimpressive loot, 5 cave bear pelts, and a shiny new (apart from all the blood) Imperial Bow that has been added to his arsenal because it had the decency to save him.

I wish I could've seen this! Never mess with bears. They're not as docile as the loading screen tells you...

Just further confirmation Sir of what I have been banging on about all along.

In order to beat the flipping Bear, we need to understand the flipping Bear.

I'm so tired.

This is why the whole 'Imperials vs Stormcloaks' business is so funny. Bears win handily. Without player intervention Alduin eats both sides and probably doesn't work up a good burp. The Thalmor clearly won the day the war started and become more victorious every time anyone on either side falls in battle. Given the number of wolves I kill every time I go out I'm sure that if all the wolves banded together they would win the civil war. If the greybeards took an interest the 'Thu'um quartet' would clearly win.

I think the Stormcloaks and Imperials are fighting over who comes in next to it because neither wants the shame of coming in dead last. Final dialog on the civil war should be Tullius and Ulfric:

LOSER: You won, but you still svck.

WINNER: Well, we may be puny but we're one up on you.

I of course thought this would end up being Empire vs Stormcloaks, but this is a nice change.

I suppose that Blacksmith in Solitude was right all along "You think Legionares and Stormcloaks are dangerous? Hah!".
