You can activate it on Steam, a matter of fact I think you will haft to.
All kidding aside, Yes, when you install the CD, it will authenticate through Steam automatically, OR force you to install it to authenticate. This happened when I installed Skyrim from my Collector's CD or any other Steam restricted games, so i see no reason it would be any different here.
So in short, I don't believe you will have a choice but to use steam, even if you install from a disk. The disk will simply drastically reduce the amount of downloading you do.
There is a steam key included on the PC version.
The Disc only has part of the data on there, rest is downloaded from steam.
They key will be in the DVD case, so no early play.
You can go under your games on steam and enter your codes the activate product on steam.
at the very top left side of your steam window there is the 5 or so menu's no idea if more or less depending on region you are in, go under the one marked games, and in that menu you can find the activate a product on steam, and following the information given agreement to abide by steam rules and such 1 or 2 windows in you get a window where you can place the product key that came with the game, and boom game is registered to your steam account and you can download it once pre load has become available.
