Why more than one settlement for your family? Unless of course the farm settlement really became prior source to food, sanctuary prior source to water, pit stop prior source for supply lines (centralized) etc etc perhaps with some quest to it.

"mainly". For example the food should come mainly from the Farm because "other areas are simply not so fertile!" ...

It would be very nice if the trade routes shared materials other than "junk", yes.

The current incarnation of settlements just begs for expansion.
