Settlement defense?

Hi all - so I got a notification that one of my settlements was under attack and in need of defense.

I fast-traveled there immediately and there was 1 mutant wandering too close that got gunned down by turrets. There was one dead mutant hound there as well. No other corpses and no other SMs attacking. It's been about 10 minutes of realtime with nothing attacking, and I've searched the immediate area thoroughly, but I still have the active quest to defend the settlement.

This happened to me before with another settlement, though I didn't notice the quest was still active and left the scene. There also, I searched the nearby area and found no other enemies. I also repaired a couple of turrets that were damaged before I left. A few minutes later realtime I got the notification that the mission to defend the settlement had failed.

What trigger am I missing to set the quest to complete?? I don't want to leave the area until it's cleared. (Playing on PS4 so can't use console commands.)

Unfortunately, there seems to be an occasional bug where an enemy killed outside of the settlement's control zone (Where you can build) doesn't register towards the success of the defense.

Only solution at the minute does seem to require console commands, finding the dead attackers outside the settlement, dragging the corpse in and resurrecting them to be killed again. Obviously, not an option for you, so hopefully it will get patched.

I've no idea how it works. I was in my settlement when one of the settlers turned out to be a synth and was killed by dogmeat. I didn't get a completion and when Ieft I go a failed notification I went back and there were scraps of super mutants everywhere.

there is a mod on nexus that turns them off, which I am considering.

I've had one of them, a group of Synth attackers is supposed to be triggered with the Synth. But the game either doesn't spawn them, or spawns the wrong type and screws things up.

Took about five reloads before the correct Synth attackers spawned and the mission cleared correctly.

That was the other weird thing that happened another time. One of my settlers got killed, and I thought they were marked as essentials and not killable. (Am I wrong about that?) Then I checked his inventory and he had a synth component on him. This happened during an attack by synths. That one I failed, too, but I assumed it was because one of my settlers died?? It's a little confusing.
