what are the sales of F4 campared to F3 F:NV?

I am really liking Fallout 4 and am am certain that my gut feeling is tellung me that many others will feels the same. I feel this much more than with F3 and F:NV

I felt similar with TES V:Skyrim. When TES IV: Oblivion was released, I live the game so much that I tried to get other (console) gamers into it thinkung that they would feel the same. I was quite surprised that many did not get the same buzz and love. What shocked me more ws the way that these same people suddenly bought Skyrim (over the hype) and seemed to love it. I have tried to understand this and I am thinking that an Action / Adventure style rpg is better liked than someyhing that asked a lot of game deciding choices over character. Most people just want to play the game rather than be be faced with a choice which they know in their heart could be game changing. The effect is negative rather than game enhancing.

Skyrim and also Fallout has conquered both the rpg market (though somevon here may criticise that they prefered that older system without actually admitting how good the finsl product is compared to all else on the market) and also the open world / actoon adventure market.


Thoughts put aside. I am curious what the sales of the game is saying. I am aware of Skyrim and how Oblivion (even after Skyrim's success which should have brought more interest) compared.


Anyone know that actual data?

I don't know the actual data for Fallout 4. But the sales for each Bethesda game has outpaced the last. TES is the most drastic, but Fallout 3 and NV sold around the same which was a few million more than Oblivion, and then Skyrim was a massive breakout over Fallout 3, I think the actual number is 20 million or so.



If the pattern holds Fallout 4 is going to sell even more than that when its at this point in its life-cycle. Skyrim still makes massive amounts of sales even years after its release. Maybe the pattern will be broken, I don't know, the negative reaction Ive seen to Fallout 4 has been a bit more varied than the no-change brigade that plagues every game. Maybe that 84 on metacritic will cause less sales, but then it didn't seem to matter much for New Vegas which although lower wasnt that far off from Fallout 3.

The amount of sales won′t give you any help on your "anolysis". Most aaa titles today get high sales in the first days/months just cause of the hype train they have and the quality of their predecessors.



The first customer reactions "might" be visible with the sales of the dlc ... or even far delayed with fallout 5 somewhen.



For example, i was on the hype train with my expectations from F3/NV too and canceled my season pass preorder for Fallout 4 some weeks ago, so in a sales statistic i would look like a sucessful happy Fallout 4 customer but get later recognized as a customer less in the dlc-sales statistic.

Well you can use something like Vgchartz - http://www.vgchartz.com/- As of now it shows 6 million sold on PS4 and 4 million sold on Xbox one (roughly) that is just physical copies. Last i heard Steam had around 2 million registered users with Fallout 4. So roughly 12 - 14 million copies. Fallout 3 and New Vegas sold well for its time, but not really the same. This game was hyped, beyond belief and it came off Skyrim which was a huge commercial success. Skyrim still sells to this day and is on the top 10 list of games played on Steam. If Fallout 4 follows that pattern it is gonna sell 30 million lifetime easily. Mods on console will ensure longer lifetime and sales, that also depends on this console generation and how long it lasts. Future DLC, mods on PC etc. Not sure if this answers your question(s), but my take on the situation as of right now.

I am not convinced that earlier game sales reflected their time. I have gamets on my xbox friends list who tried Oblivion but didn't take to it. These same people have bought and taken to games such as Action / Adventure games like Bioshock and Assassins Creed. When Skyrim was released they were amazed and loved it. It is based on this fact that I am curious.


In addition to this, had Oblivion been more like Skyrim, then many fans of Skyrim would have gone back to it as it was on the same platform. Fallout 3 I think did better than Oblivion as it is a more acceptable setting. Many people are not taken in my high fantasy. This is another possible reason why Skyrim was accepted easier as it felt more like a mythological viking saga.

Part of the sells are it's been dumb down and there little to no choices/ consequences. I understand people enjoy running around killing with no negative effects but the lack of choices/ consequences are something I hate in Skyrim and Fallout 4. I like them but give me Fallout 3 and NV over them any day.

No, part of the sales is because Skyrim did so well and this built hype. There is no such thing as dumbing down, there are streamlining of elements while still managing to keep the depth. You have become very hostile towards the game over time Seto.

The question is, isn′t streamlining some kind of "dumbing down"? At last it almost always means reducing more or less partial depth of specific game mechanics for to get accepted by a broader audience. Something like "streamlining while keep the depth" is simply impossible due to it′s own limitations.

The cake is easy, shooter fans want to shoot and not to talk a lot or combine for hours what skills/perks to take. If you want to attract that gamergroup you have to reduce conversation and rpg elements to a level where you "think" that it might be enough to keep the fans of smalltalk and rpg still happy while you don′t want to annoy the shooter fans. There is nothing like "streamlining of elements while still managing to keep the depth" as it′s simply impossible as it does not exist - it′s always a hard cut at specific parts of a game a developer has to decide for to streamline something.

Fallout 4 will have its own sales of course ... but it is already leading into more sales of Fallout 3 / NV



Just like Starcraft /Broodwar are still sold today , even though Starcraft 2 came out. Fallout 4 will just drive intrest then sales back to the older game. And even back to sales of F01&2



We will see how moldable fallout 4 is , compared to Fo3. But that is the real ticket to longevity.


Until Fo4's mod community comes into fruition and surpasses Fo3. It will remain as lesser than .

I don't know, not having purchased FO 4 yet, but does it require a Steam account like Skyrim did? If so, would the 2 million on Steam be more indicative of who has the game? If Steam is not a requirement, then never mind :)

I agree about streamlining. The term "dumbing down" to me is just a nonsense term that a certain minority of player has learned to throw around as they aren't getting their own way. They streamline certain aspects but put that time into the greater experience. Things such as movement and the way the world around the character interacts.


It is my impression that the streamlining is what has made the game more acceptable to a wider audience. It is a certain hardcoe (& a loud voiced one at that) who are out and out old school rpg. I am of the impression that a majority of gamers find too much rpg as tedious and due to their lack of interest, lack the knowledge to set up and create characters properly. Which then effects their gaming experience. That is why I feel many take better to Action / Adventure and rpg is for a minority.

To the first question i have to reply "What?" i have no idea what point you are trying to get across. But i am not going to go into yet another discussion on this. I have said my piece on this time and time again, and i see Fallout 4 as an RPG even though i am clearly wrong and everyone else on the Internet is right! Is the game flawed? Yes very, does it do alot of things right? Yes it does, and i can live with the flaws. Everything we take in, be it books, movies, videogames, music, it all has flaws, but when we like something we look past the flaws and embrace what is great about it. I have no reason to nitpick my way through everything in my life, if i find enjoyment and i know why i find it that is enough for me.

But a lot of the perks are just like Skyrim's perks. It's either damage dealing or damage resistance and some are just flat out useless.

Well every Fallout game has its useless perks though, not like that is new to Fallout 4. Actually Fallout 3 has such boring perks that doesn't really change up much of the dialogue or the gameplay, granted there is some, but meh.

No, but compared to FO3 Vanilla no DLC to FO4 with no DLC since none are released yet. How much dialog is in FO3, I do not even think FO3 with all the DLC's have as much dialog as FO4 and the dlc's are not out yet. This is not about the quality of it, since everyone will have differing tastes





And the Vanilla perks for FO3 are about the same since most of them added a few skill points to a skill or offer a damage resistance and such.



For me I kind of prefer to have perks like FO4/Skyrim did, but everyone has different opinions.
