Pet Peeves IV

Post » Tue Sep 06, 2016 1:00 pm

so, been awhile since we had one of these threads.. http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1593272-pet-peeves-iii/page-1 if anyones interested..

so, to start off, here one of my many pet peeves:

when people say "Tolkien invented the fantasy genre and its tropes".. because no, he didn't, not even close.. Tolkiens work was, for the most part, a mass combination of concepts from countless legends, folk lore, various mythologies, and plot ideas that had existed in previous literary works for centuries..

now don't get me wrong, Tolkiens work is to this day a classic, he just didn't "invent" the fantasy genre, and most of the things in his works were obviously taken from much older works..

Oh I'll tell you my Tolken peeve. I hate when people call him sixist and racist because the Hobbit didn't have colored and gay dwarves., and the Fellowship of the Ring didn't have any girls in it. Oh man, I get hot about that.

Sorry for the rant, I get that way because I'm a Tolkien freak.

Edit: I meant the actual Fellowship, not the name of the first book. You know, the name of the actual party.

Oh boy, my hatred for Tolkien worshipers begun when I started playing LOTRO. Then there are the people who refuse to accept any form of fantasy that's not Tokien-like. It's either "It's too much like Tolkien, it svcks!" or "It's trying too hard to not be Tolkien, it svcks!" I have a few author friends who have gone through so much pain because of it.

Oh they drove me nuts in the forums over there. I remember one guy rage quit LOTRO because he felt that the Foresaken Inn was on the wrong side of the road.

Oh there was hell going on, in the Laurelin server when the Beorning were announced, so many cries about lore breaking and how they are all going to quit the game!

Beorning are released and they all roll one. :P Man, Laurelin left me with a sore taste in my mouth, people are so toxic there. You'll get insulted for -questing- in the Pony or any where else where people are rping. Went over to Landroval and you can just breath easier knowing that no one is going to scream at you for not blinking in a way Tolkien said. All the music festivals they put are fun too!

isn't that how people complain about everything these days?

if a works protagonist is male, people complain the author is sixist.. if however the protagonist is female, then the author isn't sixist?

Another pet peeve of mine is when someone freaks out when they find out that I used to go hunting in rural Louisiana when I was a kid. From the way they act, you would think I was Jack the Ripper.

I'm not kidding, they go beserk.

Nah if the protagonist is female then the author is a pandering SJW. :P

Man, that sounds annoying, nothing wrong with some hunting.

Now for my pet peeve, retail, anything involving customers. I worked at a call center for a short time here where I took emails and chats for a website that sells things that are around $1k+ (I think the most expensive thing they have is around 20k?) Man those customers were entitled like crazy.

"I shipped this to my winter home now I'm in my summer home and it's all your fault!"

"I didn't know it was final sale it's your fault!" (Every time in the website that is final sale has a big green neon sign stating that.)

"I ordered this midnight, I want it by 6am!"

If you could call people out on their [censored] retail would be so much better.

Yeah I was going with my dad when I was 6. I didn't handle the gun of course but I watched. When I was 9 he started letting me carry my own riffle. I told a liberal friend of mine that and he lost his mind. I had a good laugh at it later.

A small one, but it irks me when you go to quit a game it brings you to the main menu instead of the desktop. Its just an extra step, but it bothers me when games do it.

That is one thing I like about fo4. It gives you a choice between main menu and desktop.

I'm with you here! If I want to "quit the game", I want to QUIT THE GAME! Fallout 3 and NV were good about this, as were the three TES games I've played. The Shadowrun series, not so good.

Related: I like Fallout 3's start-up menu where one clicks "Continue" and then just to the left is the "OK" option. Just a tiny mouse move to go in. In Fallout NV, the "OK" option is a bit of a move to click. Not great, but still there. And my favorite is Skyrim's [enter] to continue and [enter] to say "OK."

Those exist? How in the [censored] does anyone find Vegan Cat food?

OT: Vegans. Wait, I said that already.

OT: That beeping sound Skype makes. In a group chat that thing becomes an alarm clock.

-Save point games.

-Puzzles I can't solve without looking it up outside game. (Wiki, etc.)

-People who act like I have on my ring of invisibility (walk in front of me. People behind desk or counter waiting on the person behind me. Makes me want to [censored] slap them, or roll over their toes with my wc.)

-Liars

-Waiting for lorries.. "We will deliver between 8am-8pm."

Edit

- Turn based play. I don't care if you get a turn.

see, I love turn-based systems... they contain a level of strategy and tactics you just don't get in real-time systems
