Oblivion on the xbox one?

Post » Sat Oct 29, 2016 11:31 am

Well it seems about time someone brought this up. Backwards compatibility is not something that bethesda is new to, fallout 3 is b/c yet oblivion isn't. There are many fans of TES who traded in their xbox 360's for the next generation console only to find that they couldn't play the highest rated most popular rpg of the past decade, at least until skyrim was released, yet there are a multitude of games available that hail from that time period including several titles produced by bethesda. This thread is to garner support for the eventual inclusion of oblivion as a backwards compatible title.

Thank you princess stopper, I'm new to this forum and I was told by bethesda support to come here and get involved when I brought up oblivion not being b/c.

Thing is, Backwards compatibility (in this context) is a Microsoft feature they designed to allow 360 games to be played on the Xbox One. It's up to Microsoft which games make the list, Not Bethesda.

Although backwards compatibility would certainly be well received for Oblivion a re-master across all 3 platforms would be much, much more welcome.

I do think that Bethesda does have a say if it is available for it or not.

Well I contacted Microsoft and they told me it's up to the publisher, not Microsoft, to decide what becomes b/c, also when I contacted bethesda they corroborated that it's their responsibility and prerogative.

That's why I'm contributing to this forum in this manner, hopefully if theirs enough public support bethesda and zenimax will assess the situation and at least provide some input on the matter at hand concerning b/c versions of older ga,es including oblivion

Perhaps because the original didn't exactly use only the published interfaces. Games often use custom hardware access on consoles to get extra speed. A Microsoft conversion either wouldn't work, or they'd have to supply proprietary source. This may not be the case here, but it's one reason.

Microsoft will be assuming compliant DirectX code. Oblivion might not be.

I think real 'Hardware Banging' as you described above died with Amiga, Console games are made on dev kits/PC's etc and I doubt Microsoft would allow any unknown 'proprietary' code to run on their system.

Ultimately the backwards compatibility on the Xbox One is actually NOT backwards compatibility at all despite what Microsoft claim. The entire 360 OS is emulated in a virtual box within the Xbox One which is why they games need modifying in the first place, They require a wrapper of some sort and small changes to iron out performance issues etc. the actual game code itself requires very little if any changes. (Or so I've read anyway). :)

Seriously though those bastards at Microsoft support have some 'esplainin to do and the support lady seemed so genuine and sweet too, I've been on the xbox b/c forum and lately peeps are getting fed up with all their votes going nowhere so far I think 51,000 people have voted for it, check out the main xbox b/c page for some real wtf moments starting with the fact that skyrim and call of duty "whatever the [censored]" are at the top of the list and only one on the list is getting ported and it's bioshock

So what kind of work would either bethesda teams or Microsoft teams need to do to make oblivion run on an Xbox one? What are some routes they could take and what are some problems they'd run into?
