Buy console for one game

Post » Fri Mar 03, 2017 4:07 am

I was just wondering, have any of you ever bought a console just to play a particular game? I have several times. I bought the 8 bit Nintendo just for Zelda, the PS2 for San Andreas, Xbox for Morrowind, and like I said in another thread, I plan on getting the Switch for Animal Crossing.

How about you good people? Have you ever plunked down several hundred dollars just to buy a console for one game?

Currently, I have the Xbox One Slim just so that I can play the original Halo games without having to change discs or worry about shoddy backwards compatibility. However, I will be using the console for whatever Xbox 360 games I own that are BC with XB1, especially if my 360 bites the dust eventually.

First, let me say yes. I needed a PS4 for Bloodborne.
But...

The good thing is that I knew I'd be using the PS4 for lots of other games too, so in reality I bought it to play "next gen" games in general.

Bloodborne just guaranteed that I picked Sony over Microsoft.

I've never done that. I always buy a machine with the games in mind, not just one game.

Bought the Xbox 360 for oblivion specifically because I knew my computer wouldn't run it when it came out. Man that game hyped me so much I spent 500 dollars on a console just to play it. And when the game got pushed back 5 months, that was the longest 5 months of my life. I was like cartman in that episode where he wants to freeze himself so the wait for the wii was instant. I would have done it if it were possible.

No. I've never bought a console. But if i did, I would never buy it to play just one game.

You should buy a console. If you haven't played Uncharted or the Last of Us, you don't know what you're missing.

Well, I bought a console to play two games. Halo 3 and Oblivion on Xbox 360. Of course I ended up playing many other things on there, as well. Now I'm PC through and through, though.

PC is quite nice. :foodndrink:

Paired with a Nintendo or PS4, you can't really go wrong. Nothing against Xbox, just that a lot of the games are multiplatf.

I bought a PS4 basically just for Bloodborne. Although there were a number of exclusives I had an interest in playing on the console, I probably wouldn't have budged if Bloodborne weren't a thing. But it has paid off since my library on the console is expanding steadily with all of these nice games.

Nope. The closest I've gotten to that is just buying something for exclusives (like the PS4). Never back in the day though. I enjoyed every bit of those consoles.

Lets see...

N64 for Super Mario 64

PS2 for Timesplitters

Original XBox for Halo

XBox 360 for Oblivion

PS4 for Destiny (which I view as a mistake)

I got my XB360 just for Madden. I have since enlarged my library (mainly boardgames), but 95% of its use is for either Madden NFL or NCAA Football :)

One game doesn't pull me in, but for my PS3 it was essential only for the God of War games and I played the first three Uncharted since they seem to be a OK

I bought a 360 so I could play Fable 2. Glad I did, it's by far the best in the series IMO. Other than that it's only used to display Amazon Prime on the downstairs telly: the controller makes an incredibly terrible remote control but at least it works.

I did get it second hand though, so it wasn't enormously expensive.

The Sega Dreamcast for "House Of The Dead 2".

Of course I was looking forward to playing other games as well and with "Dead Or Alive 2" and "Soul Calibur" who could have needed anything else?

Have an XBox ONE for gaming and online gaming and a PS4 for all the Japanese stuff Microsoft tend to ignore.

This is not really a great gen to gaming unfortunately with Publishers trying to bleed their customers dry and charge them twice for each game or more if they can get it.

I got up, ate my breakfast, travelled to work, did my job until lunch time, had a break and ate my lunch, went back to work, finished my shift, traveled home, ate my supper, went to bed, got up and did it all again.

For a video game back then this was innovative.

However to someone already gainfully employed... it was not entertainment.

I bought a Xbox 360 just for http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lost_Odyssey, which is also probably the best JRPG released in the past decade. But I waited, didn't do it until late 2012 when the Xbox 360 S 4GB was exceptionally cheap during Black Friday and by that time I had already bought Lost Odyssey for about $10 too. So I paid about $110 for it or something, and I've bought Collector's Editions that cost more than that.

About a year ago I bought a Wii U for only a few games too, 4 actually. Bayonetta 2, LEGO City Undercover, Xenoblade Chronicles X and the new Zelda that is released this week. XCX was a massive disappointment for me, LEGO City Undercover is released for multiple other platforms next month, Zelda is released for another platform too, so that leaves me with Bayonetta 2 as the single reason to keep the Wii U.

I kind of regret never buying a Dreamcast for Shenmue 1 and 2, but it's once again rumoured that Shenmue 1&2 HD is coming soon. Let's hope it's true this time.
