Model and textures

I'm trying to put together a new player house. I have a model in 3dsmax 10 with the newest niftools plugin. When I export to nif and open in nifskope, my textures are all gone. I'm pretty sure this is because i'm using standard max shaders. When I try to select the 'niftools shader' in the material editor in max, it crashes max. It happens every time, even upon just opening. This brings up a couple questions.

Is there a reasonable way to get textures from my model in max into the nif file, or am I stuck re-entering them all one by one in nifskope? I'm not a one-texture-per-model sort of person so that can be quite cumbersome.

Also, does anyone know if support and development for the max plugins is over? It looks like there is still activity with blender and other tools, but possibly the max person has moved on to other things?

As far as development, yes, max has been halted for a while now. The person working on them moved on.
